Northleach Primary School pupil Orlagh Lindley is thriving after taking up triathlon
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Saturday, 18th October 2025, 09:00
Young Orlagh Lindley has just completed her second year as a triathlete and she’s come a long way in a short time.
The just-turned 11-year-old, who lives in Northleach, is one of an increasing number of youngsters who is enjoying the challenge of taking on the three disciplines that make up the triathlon – swimming, cycling and running.
The Northleach Primary School pupil is a member of Cirencester Swimming Club and her mum Karen says swimming is her strongest discipline.
“She really enjoyed her swimming lessons when she first started,” said Karen, who has just qualified as a triathlon coach.
“She swims for Cirencester and does all the strokes – she’s in the top 25 for her age group in the county for both the butterfly and backstroke.”
The triathlon requires her to swim freestyle, something she also enjoys because swimming is her favourite of the three triathlon disciplines.
She also enjoys cycling. The running is a work in progress but Karen says she’s getting better.
So why did Orlagh take up triathlon?
“We thought it would be good for her fitness,” explained Karen. “It gives her something to do and we like the fact she’s part of a team.”
That team is Vale Tridents Junior Triathlon Club who this year are celebrating their 20th anniversary.
They are based in Faringdon just over the county border in Oxfordshire and draw members aged eight to 17 from all the surrounding counties as well as Gloucestershire.
Vale Tridents, who have 50 members, do some of their swim training at Lake 62 at Cotswold Water Park and Karen continued: “They are a tremendously supportive club, they cheer every member as well as all the competitors from other clubs.
“Triathlon has given Orlagh the chance to make new friends, it gives her a sense of achievement, it’s good for her to see how much she is improving.”
Orlagh’s age group requires her to swim 200 metres, cycle three kilometres and run 1.8 miles competitively, something she usually completes in under 25 minutes.
“There aren’t too many triathlon specific clubs and there aren’t too many junior triathlon clubs,” added Karen. “We spend a lot of time working on the transitions, it’s linking up all the disciplines.”
The current season has just about ended and the preparations for 2026 have already begun.
The club train every Saturday for two hours and Karen, with her coach’s hat on, said: “The hard work starts now.”
