Kingsholm captain Luke Bond admits he is still coming to terms with his amazing bowling performance at the weekend.

The 23-year-old pacey seamer took all 10 wickets as Westbury-on-Severn were bundled out for 64 in Division Two of the Gloucestershire League.

The one-time Sir Thomas Rich’s pupil finished with 10-34 from his nine overs – seven of his victims were bowled and another fell lbw - as his side enjoyed a thumping 168-run win.

“I don’t really believe it, it doesn’t feel like it happened,” he told The Local Answer. “It’s crazy, surreal.”

Bond’s once-in-a-lifetime performance followed on from his performance at Dumbleton 2nds two weeks previously – his most recent league game before the trip to Westbury – when he took 7-28.

“That was my best bowling performance, before Saturday,” he said.

And it would almost certainly have remained his best performance had it not been for the intervention of Bond’s team-mate Matt Cayless.

“I was going to take myself off after my sixth over,” he said. “I’d taken four wickets and I didn’t think I was going to break the partnership.

“Matt convinced me to have another over and then I got my fifth wicket.”

That left Westbury 51-5 and the end of the game was in sight although Bond admits he had no idea it would finish like it did.

“I didn’t really start believing I could take all 10 until I got my ninth and I had four balls at their number 11,” he said.

“I thought, ‘I probably should do this’.”

He did it with his final delivery which meant that his new-ball partner Jack Beck was wicketless from his eight overs.

“He bowled well, I wanted him to get a wicket,” said Bond, who now has 24 wickets in the league this season.

Bond, who has spent the last two winters playing cricket in Victoria, has been with Kingsholm for the past 10 years.

This is his first season as captain of the first team – the club were relegated last season – and he’s enjoying the role.

“Promotion would be really, really good,” he said. “I’d love for the club to have some success.

“The club means a lot to me, I love winning games with my mates.”

And he’s not set himself a wicket-target for the season.

“I don’t think about a number,” he said. “If we won every game and I didn’t get a wicket I’d be happy.”

His dad Adrian, mum Angela Pala and nan Angela Bond were all at Westbury which made the day just that bit more special – his nan has watched his last two games – and they will all be looking forward to Saturday’s game at home to bottom-of-the-table Redmarley.

So will Bond bowl the first over?

“Probably!”, he said.
