Charlton Super Kings skipper Charles Watkins smashed 11 sixes in a whirlwind 96 but he still didn't finish on the winning side.

His team were beaten by Dumbleton Dynamite in a rain-affected game at Ryeworth in the Cheltenham Premier T20, closing on 189-6 after being set a revised target of 199 to win in 18 overs.

Watkins, batting at three, was in second ball and after a cautious start cut lose. He hit Dan Holland for four successive sixes and then thumped three sixes from four balls off Ewan Gegg.

His 51-ball innings included two fours before he fell to the fourth delivery of the final over.

The home side needed 30 going into the last over and club chairman John Watkins, 19-year-old Charlie's dad, said he was still hopeful they could pull off what would have been a memorable win.

"Charlie didn't score until the eighth ball he faced, we were 7-3 at one stage," he said. "He scored his last 84 runs from 30 balls."

And many of those runs were scored with very big hits.

"It's a relatively small playing area so we do get our fair share of sixes, but 11 is quite a lot!" added Watkins with some understatement.

"He hit one or two over the clubhouse which is always a thing and he hit a couple over the trees into the field. He hit quite a few over deep midwicket."

Watkins was finally dismissed by Dumbleton's Australian overseas star Tom Kelly, who was the first person to go up to him and say "well played".

Kelly, who opened the innings, had earlier made 83, scoring his runs from just 38 balls, an innings that included seven fours and seven sixes as Dumbleton reached 214-4 in their 20 overs.

"He's a very good player," said Watkins.

It was almost as close at the Victoria Ground where Bourton Vale Vikings overcame Cheltenham Spartans by 10 runs in another rain-affected game.

Bourton made 131-8 in 20 overs – George Pritchard took 3-18 – but Cheltenham, set a revised target of 104 from 15 overs, closed on 93-6.

Leaders Hatherley and Reddings Hurricanes eased to a seven-wicket win over Tewkesbury Royals, overhauling their revised target of 81 in 16 overs with 12 balls to spare.

Earlier, Tewkesbury had been bowled out for 96 in 18.2 overs with skipper Joel Price and Rajesh Sake both picking up 3-15.
