All Golds well beaten by 9-try Torfaen Tigers
Cheltenham > Sport > Rugby League
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 29th July 2019, 15:40
Despite a disciplined performance, the All Golds were beaten 48-12 by Torfaen Tigers at New Panteg.
The Tigers ran hard, hit hard and were organised both with and without the ball. Only towards the end of the game did the All Golds begin to match the Tigers’ intensity though throughout the game they were wasteful of possession when they had it.
However, they were disciplined, with the first penalty against them coming after 57 minutes’ play and only one more followed it, but the Tigers took full advantage of both and scored immediately afterwards.
After trailing 24-0 at the interval, the All Golds pulled a score back early in the second half but the turning point came when they were unable to take advantage of a superb Joe Uren break up the middle immediately after the restart, and Torfaen scored in their next set to effectively seal the game.
Torfaen had opened the scoring after just two minutes when scrum half Morgan Cochran slipped through to feed the supporting Kurtis Haile who touched down under the posts.
Cochran booted the first of his six goals for the day in a fine all-round performance. Haile was to go on to score a hat-trick of tries as did wing Mathew Jones who grabbed his first on 10 minutes when the home side capitalised on an All Golds’ error early in the tackle count.
Eavan Morris registered the Tigers’ third try 10 minutes later finishing some neat work down the left. He blotted his copybook shortly afterwards, however. Having broken through and been halted by a fine Tom Gaffney tackle, the winger threw an elbow in trying to get up to play the ball and was sin-binned by referee Kristoff Young.
The Tigers comfortably survived the 10 minutes they were a man down and even extended their lead when prop Darrel Moyle ran through some flimsy defence to touch down from 10 metres out.
The All Golds had to be first on the board in the second half and after an error-strewn start from both sides, they soon crossed the whitewash. Luke Kell found a gap and dodged and weaved his way through for a well-taken score. Rhys Evans added the extras.
Uren made his break in the All Golds’ next set, but the chance went begging and the Tigers instantly extended their lead. After a harsh ruling that gave the home side a fresh set of tackles, Morris finished another slick handling move with his second try out wide.
Haile then struck twice in quick succession, both times supporting through the middle to finish some fine work from the influential Cochran before Jones got in on the act.
The winger scored his second try from the restart after Hailes had scored his hat-trick try. The Tigers caught the All Golds defence short down the right and Jones had plenty of room to skip round Evans and dive over.
Trailing 42-6, the All Golds began to find some joy with strong runs from Ash Lewis, Marcus Brown and Hector Silva driving the team down field. After one such power drive from Lewis, the All Golds won a penalty and Kaine Dimech ran hard for the line to touch down by the posts for a consolation try.
The game finished with the Tigers stealing the ball and Jarad Hinnem sending Jones racing to the posts to conclude a second convincing home win for the Tigers over the All Golds in the space of a month.
