Chipping Campden head to Bourton Vale in confident mood
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 15th May 2026, 09:30
Chipping Campden make the relatively short trip to Cotswolds neighbours Bourton Vale tomorrow looking to make a big impression.
The two teams meet in a West of England Premier League Gloucestershire Division clash with both sides having made encouraging starts to the campaign.
It’s still very early days, of course, but Bourton Vale, last season’s runners-up, have won two out of two, while newly promoted Chipping Campden, who finished third in Division One of the Gloucestershire Cricket League last season, are also unbeaten.
They beat Langford by 44 runs six days ago after their season-opener at Gloucester was abandoned when they had posted 296-5 in their 50 overs.
Sam Groves top-scored for them that day with an unbeaten 61 and he followed up by making 84, again batting at six, in their 239-7 against Langford.
Bourton Vale, meanwhile, beat Cheltenham 2nds by nine wickets in a rain-affected game on day one and followed up with a five-wicket success at Charlton Kings.
“They will be a big test, hopefully we can match them,” said Chipping Campden vice-captain Matt Andrews.
“They’ve always been the best team in the area, but to be in the same division as them is exciting for us.
“The aim this season is to push for the top half of the table, but we are also realistic.
“We’re now playing at a decent level, the big difference between the WEPL and the Gloucestershire League, and I’m not taking anything away from Division One, is the drive to win.”
Andrews, a wicketkeeper/batsman from Queensland, is in his third season with the club.
The 26-year-old joined the club as an overseas player but is now living here permanently and is loving his cricket.
“I’ve really bought into it,” he said. “It’s really nice to see a cricket club like Chipping Campden blossom, now we’re taking the next big step.”
And they’re going to play front-foot cricket.
“We play a fun style of cricket but we play with confidence,” said Andrews, who bats at three. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously and I think that’s a big part of our success. But we do want to win.”
Dylan McAteer, who played with Andrews in Australia, is Chipping Campden’s overseas player this season and he took 4-53 in the win over Langford.
“He’s a bowling all-rounder, he bowls leg-spin,” said Andrews, a greenkeeper at Broadway Golf Club. “He’ll fit in well.”
