Jamie Cooke is on top of the world after winning gold in thrilling style

Gloucestershire is today celebrating its second ever world pentathlon champion.

Twenty-five years after Richard Phelps grabbed gold in Darmstadt, Germany, Jamie Cooke, from Andoversford, matched that achievement by winning in Mexico City.

And some performance it was too by the former Balcarras School pupil who snatched gold with a tremendous sprint finish.

The 27-year-old was in third place ahead of the final event – the 3,200 metres run – but pulled out all the stops to finish ahead of second-placed Frenchman Valentin Prades and bronze medallist Pavlo Tymoshchenko of Ukraine.

The other disciplines were a 200 metres swim, fencing, horseriding and the laser shoot.

Cooke, who these days is based in Bath, finished seventh at the Rio Olympics and this win was his first senior major championship medal of his career. He also helped Great Britain to win team silver in Mexico.
