Crisp air, crunchy autumn leaves and beautiful countryside views are a common occurrence in the lives of members of the The Ramblers.

They are extremely popular, holding the impressive status of Britain’s largest walking charity. There is a community of over 110,000 members and 38,000 led walks take place a year across England, Scotland and Wales.

The Gloucestershire Walking Group are a popular division of this well-established set-up which was started 34 years ago.

So much so that their walks at times attract over 40 people.

Chairman Derek Hughes believes this popularity is because walking is one of the “best exercises you can do” and because of the varied length of their walks.

Recent walks include a trip to the Big Apple Festival in Much Marcle and a visit to see the autumnal beauty that is Westonbirt Arboretum.

Walks coming up in the near future include one in Bristol which will be a chance for those involved to experience historical sites and great views.

Chipping Camden, one of the jewels in the Cotswolds, is also on the agenda.

Walking is certainly a great way to spend your time. It is a chance to get out in the fresh air and enjoy your surroundings. The group’s website describe it as a way to “boost your health and happiness”.

Gloucestershire Walking Group also provides a way to meet new people and improve your social life. Derek describes the group as “social, friendly and welcoming”.

There are social events to get involved with after joining. These include meals out, pub quizzes and a Christmas party. Trips away to places such as Snowdonia and Spain, for Derek, provide a real highlight.

A 20s and 30s group has also been launched, which has proved a popular initiative with those born post 1980 or just before.

The Ramblers are not limited to just being a fun pastime and form of exercise, though. The association has also undertaken the responsibility of promoting walking and protecting Britain’s footpaths and countryside.

It seems that the association is certainly taking everything in its stride!
