Alex Atkinson is the hero as Cam beat Westbury-on-Severn by one wicket in Division Two of the Gloucestershire League

Number 11 Alex Atkinson was the Cam hero as they beat Westbury-on-Severn by one wicket in a thriller on Saturday.

Atkinson hit the winning runs in the penultimate over to get his side over the line in Division Two of the Gloucestershire League.

“He heaved the ball through cow corner for four,” said captain Alex Ballard. “It was a really good game, exciting but nailbiting.”

Cam overhauled Westbury’s 201-9 with eight balls remaining and Ballard continued: “I think the last six runs came off 25 or 26 balls.

“We were very composed, we showed plenty of patience.”

Chris Wilcox, who went in at the fall of the eighth wicket, was undefeated on 18 in what proved to be an important innings.

“It was a real team effort,” added Ballard. “Chris and Ben Dolbear made some crucial runs for the eighth wicket.”

Dolbear made 21, while opening bat George Dolling top-scored with 34.

Nathan Havard took 4-46 for Westbury having earlier made 69.

The win keeps Cam in the top four and Ballard, who made 32 against Westbury, has been pleased with their form.

“We’re enjoying our cricket, we’ll see where it takes us,” he said.
