Cheltenham swimmer Oli Roberts is a three-time winner at county championships
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 21st January 2020, 12:00
Oli Roberts, of Cheltenham Swimming and Water Polo Club, enjoyed a treble top at this year’s county championships.
The 16-year-old was in great form as he won the 50m fly, 50m backstroke and 50m free competitions.
He won Cheltenham’s first title of the 2020 county championship in the 50m fly, recording a personal best time of 27.43 seconds.
His gold medal added to the silver medal he won the previous day in the 200m freestyle, and that was soon followed by a second gold medal in the 50m freestyle, a bronze in the 50m breaststroke and then a third championship title in the backstroke.
But while Roberts was outstanding it wasn’t just a one-man show because Cheltenham, under the watchful eye of head coach Tom Howells, Chay Ajulu-Bushell, and the volunteer coaching team, also had qualifying swimmers in the younger age groups.
Alex Beale, 15, took 2.2 seconds off his personal best in the 50m fly and also swam a PB in the 50m backstroke, while Freddie Walker, 12, was the youngest male Cheltenham competitor in only his second ever race in a 50m pool.
For the girls, in the 50m backstroke water polo player Lottie Martin, 16, proved her cross-discipline talent, coming a creditable 9th, while Michaela Totolici, 15, swam a personal best.
Mara Totolici, 15, swam a personal best to finish 10th in the 800m freestyle, and the twins also posted PBs in the 200m freestyle competition. Caitlin Ng, 12, the youngest female Cheltenham competitor, reached the final of the 50m breaststroke.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
