Brockworth’s season is up and running.

They won their first game of the season on Saturday – they beat Gloucester Old Boys 15-5 – and new director of rugby Rob Hall was delighted.

“It was a stonking victory,” said Hall, who took over from Dave Pointon last week.

The win was not enough to lift Brockworth off the bottom of Counties 2 Gloucestershire North and after failing to fulfil three of their 10 fixtures this season they are well adrift of 11th-placed Bredon Star with -9 points.

“It’s been a very long, hard trawl to get this far,” said Hall, who was head coach last season.

“We’ve suffered from a lack of players, we’ve had some horrendous injuries.

“Three players did their ACLs in the last game of last season against Stroud and another two players have done their ACLs this season.

“Another player has had a shoulder injury, another broke his ankle.

“We were running a 2nd XV last season but those players have been playing in the first team this season.”

Their win at home to Gloucester Old Boys coincided with head coach Kurtis Herbert’s first game since the opening day of the season and Hall remains optimistic about the future.

The one-time Old Patesians, Gordon League and Newent second row hopes Saturday’s win can spark an upturn, saying: “Let’s hope so.

“We got a team together against Gloucester Old Boys and I’ve already got 15 names for Saturday, that’s a good start.”

Saturday’s game is at home to high-flying Cheltenham North and the following week they head to Cirencester for what will be a double-header after the game at Brockworth earlier in the season was abandoned because of an injury to one of the players.

That means Brockworth could, in theory, win 15 more points before Christmas although Hall is certainly not getting carried away.

“The aim is to try to fulfil every fixture for the rest of the season,” he said.
