Dursley host first girls' tournament... and rugby is the winner

About 100 players took part in Dursley’s girls’ tournament

Go-ahead Dursley Rugby Club have hosted their first girls’ tournament and it was a big success.

The event was for under-12s, and eight teams - 5 Valley Valkyries, Tewkesbury, Newport Knights, North Bristol, Swindon Roses, Drybrook, Ashley Down Old Boys and Barbarians - took part.

Players from Dursley made up part of the 5 Valley Valkyries team and Stewart Angell, chairman of mini and youth rugby at Dursley, said: “In the last few years girls' rugby has grown across the world and we are seeing huge interest here in Gloucestershire.

“We are part of a girls’ rugby hub, known as the 5 Valleys Valkyries, bringing together players from Painswick, Gloucester and Dursley.

“Hosting our first girls' festival at Dursley is a big step forward for all of the girls playing here.”

Dursley have girls’ teams for under-12s and under-15s – they have about 20 players – and were formed about a year ago.

The club’s women’s section has been established for a good number of years. They compete in NC 2 South West (North).
