More mums than usual are expected to be down at Cheltenham Civil Service Rugby Club tomorrow morning for the junior section’s weekly training session.

That’s because three stars from Gloucester – Freddie Clarke, Cameron Orr and Tom Marshall – will be at Tewkesbury Road to pass on their expertise to the up-and coming youngsters.

“Yes, from what I understand quite a lot of the mums will be there!” laughed Lee Janes, who is one of three people coaching the youngsters at the Gloucester Two club.

“Their visit has been organised by the community department at Gloucester and the three players will be doing some coaching and also holding a Q&A.”

Janes, who played for the Service for seven years back in the 90s – on the wing or scrum half – is the driving force behind the new junior set-up, known as The Sharks, which was established at the start of the season.

The club ran a Colts team some 20 or so years ago – the likes of Dave Cordell, Matt Viall, and Dewi Williams played for them – but, said Janes, the Colts discontinued when the players from that era turned senior. In fact they now run out for the Vets on occasion.

It means that this is the first time that the club have ever had a minis and junior section.

“I was talking to some of the lads down at the Service and we said we were missing a trick,” explained Janes.

“We’ve got these amazing facilities but we needed some fresh blood.

“I’d done some coaching before and I said I was happy to help set up a junior section.”

The first Sharks session attracted just three children but now, five months later, 16 youngsters regularly attend the two-hour sessions every Sunday morning.

“We’re still very, very small,” said Janes, whose son Matt is an under-10. “We’ve got quite a few under-8s and under-10s and we’ve deliberately tried to focus on the skills of rugby and on the ethos of rugby.

“The aim is to expand the age groups and to get more coaches involved.

“We want to get more youngsters playing rugby and the key for me is that they enjoy it.

“I don’t care if they win or lose, I just want them to come off the pitch with smiles on their faces and saying they can’t wait for their next game.”

And it seems certain that the Civil Service Sharks are here to say.

“I’ve had lots of support,” said 44-year-old Janes. “The club have been great, as have the Gloucestershire RFU, and we’ve got a great bunch of parents as well.”
