Bravemansgame can grab Cheltenham Gold Cup glory, says Robert Thornton

Get your money on Bravemansgame in the Cheltenham Gold Cup tomorrow (3.30pm).
That’s the top tip of former jockey Robert Thornton who knows a thing or two about riding a winner at the Cheltenham Festival.
The 46-year-old rode 16 in a hugely successful career that spanned two decades from 1995.
He’ll have a watching brief tomorrow, of course, but he’ll be at Prestbury Park and believes the Paul Nicholls-trained eight-year-old has a great chance of landing the showpiece race of the meeting over three miles, two furlongs.
“I’m going with my heart, I want a home victory, but I do think Bravemansgame has been overlooked,” said Thornton, who is Stud/Racing Manager for Apple Tree Stud just outside Stow-on-the-Wold. “He’s won two top races this season, he’s the King George winner.
“He’s a class horse and if he’s ridden relatively conservatively I think he’s got a great chance, the others are all slightly exposed.”
Bravemansgame is rated at around 6-1 for the blue riband event, with the Willie Mullins-trained Galopin Des Champs the big fancy in the 13-strong field at around 7-4.
“I want a bit of value,” continued Thornton. “At worst I think Bravemansgame will finish in the top three but at best I think he can win.
“Paul Nicholls has been there, done it all before, he’s got a great chance.”
Bravemansgame, who won the Charlie Hall at Wetherby at the end of October, will again be ridden by Harry Cobden, somebody who Thornton rates highly.
And Thornton also reckons that Ahoy Senor is worth an each-way bet tomorrow.
Trained by Lucinda Russell, the eight-year-old is rated around 16-1, and Thornton said: “He’s a good staying horse. You often get a horse who is not quite up to the level running into a place because of the extended distance.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
