Winchcombe Town completed the first leg of what they hope will be a league and cup double when they won the Cheltenham League Senior Charities Cup final last night.

But they had to do it the hard way against Montpellier because they trailed at half-time before pulling through to win 2-1 at the home of Cheltenham Town Football Club.

Goals by Monty New and Ed Major, the brother of manager Will Major, sealed the win against the Division One pacesetters, who had opened the scoring through Sonnie Burrows.

Premier Division leaders Winchcombe now host second-placed AFC Kempsey in their final league game of the season on Saturday knowing that a point will be enough to clinch the double.

They have a six-point advantage over the Worcester club, who have two games remaining, and their goal difference of 60 is eight better than that of Kempsey’s.

And Winchcombe, who have applied to rejoin the Northern Senior League, will certainly be in buoyant mood for the showdown with Kempsey after last night’s win.

“It was very good, I think we deserved it,” said chairman Phil Comfort. “I thought we were the better side and played the better football.

“It’s good for the football club and it’s good for Winchcombe, it gives everyone a buzz.”

Winchcombe weren’t short of supporters last night – “We like a day out,” said Comfort - and Comfort, who is in his mid-60s, is certainly one of their biggest fans.

He has been involved with the club for the best part of 50 years on and off, initially as a player and then as a manager before taking on his current role.

“I’m pleased for everyone,” Comfort continued. “It’s a good achievement for the lads and the club.”

All eyes are now focused on Kempsey, who travel to relegation-threatened on Saturday 4^th May for their final league game, and Comfort added: “It’s all to play for, let’s get the double done and then we can celebrate again.

“I think our lads fancy themselves against anyone, they’re all on a high, they’re all buzzing.

“It’s a new era, onwards and upwards.”
