Whaddon United are enjoying a fine season in the Northern Senior League Whaddon United are enjoying a fine season in the Northern Senior League

In-form Whaddon United host third-placed Dursley Town on Saturday hoping to make it 17 wins in a row in Division One of the Northern Senior League.

They’ve won 17 of their 18 games so far with their only defeat coming in mid-September when they lost 4-0 at home to Tewkesbury Town.

Leaders Tewkesbury are the only team above Whaddon in the 16-strong division – they have a seven-point advantage but have played three games more – while Dursley have 38 points from their 17 games.

“It’s going really well,” said Whaddon assistant secretary Amy Belcher, whose son Zack Hodges is one of the mainstays of the team. “The players work hard, they like winning and they’ve gelled as a team.”

They certainly have, so much so that the club, under joint managers Elliott Sheerin and Kev Taylor, are chasing their third successive title after winning the Cheltenham League and then Division Two of the Northern Senior League.

“The players have been outstanding,” said secretary Kelly Staddon, whose son Calum Denman has featured in the first team this season.

“They breezed through Division Two and now they’re doing exceptionally well in Division One.”

Staddon also confirmed that the club have applied for a place in the County League next season although she recognises there is still a lot of football to be played.

The winners of the Northern Senior League face end-of-season play-offs against the title winners from the Bristol Combination Premier League and the Bristol and Suburban League to determine which teams are promoted and Staddon said: “Every week is a big game, we’ve got to be consistent until the last game of the season.”

They’ve been consistent for quite a while now – they’ve lost just two league games in the last two-and-a-half seasons – and Belcher added: “We’re growing as a club. We’ve got three adult teams with the other two playing in the Cheltenham League.

“We’ve also got three teams playing in the Cheltenham Youth League.”

Whaddon were 5-0 winners at Longlevens Reserves on Saturday while Tewkesbury won 1-0 at Brockworth Albion.

Tewkesbury entertain Staunton & Corse on Saturday and they host Whaddon on Saturday 19th April.
