The goals are flying in at Horsley United
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 15th November 2022, 09:00
There should be goals aplenty at Horsley United on Saturday.
The great entertainers in Stroud League Division Two have been finding the net with great regularity this season, but they’ve also been letting in quite a few as well, so much so that their first 10 league games have seen 50 goals.
They are quite a bit in credit, however, having scored 32, and currently sit third in the table behind table-topping Painswick and second-placed Tuffley Rovers 3rds.
Manager Jamie Osman is obviously happy with the number of goals they are scoring – they hit six at Uley on Saturday – but the 41-year-old readily admits he’d like his team to be conceding fewer.
“I like keeping clean sheets,” he said. “We were terrible in the first half against Uley, we were 3-2 down at half-time and it could have been worse, they missed a penalty.”
Horsley turned it around after the break, scoring four unanswered goals with in-form striker Brandon Keveren grabbing a brace.
That took his tally to 12 from seven games this season – he scored 28 in 2021/22 – and Osman said: “He’s brilliant, he just runs at defenders, takes them on. He twists and turns and has got a real eye for goal.
“He’s only a small lad, there’s nothing to him. If we play three up front he’ll play on the left of the three.”
He’s still in his early 20s too so Osman, who took charge this season, is hoping there are plenty more goals to come from him in the coming weeks and months.
“We’ve got some good strikers,” he continued, “but we’ve also got some good defenders. We made a slow start to the season but that was down to availability. If everyone is available we’ll definitely be up there competing this season.”
The top two will be promoted to Division One and Saturday’s win was their sixth in the league and third in a row, but they have lost four.
Osman took over as manager from Kevin Drew, who is now his assistant. Drew is also the club’s chairman and Osman said: “He’s a valuable part of the team.”
Promotion is most certainly the aim – they finished fourth last season – and the club know what it is like to play at a higher level.
“I was captain when we won promotion to the Northern Senior League in 2003,” said Osman, who played in central defence or centre midfield.
The club spent two years in the league before dropping back, but the ambition is certainly there at a club who were formed way back in 1913.
They also have teams which compete in divisions four and six of the Stroud League, so there is plenty of football to be played.
Osman joined the club well over 20 years ago after a spell at Taverners, who Horsley host on Saturday.
“It should be a very good game,” he said. “They are up near the top of the table with us, it’s one we want to win.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
