Stonehouse Town stun leaders Droitwich Spa with super show
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 2nd December 2024, 11:30
Stonehouse Town produced a standout performance to end Droitwich Spa’s long unbeaten run in Division One of the Hellenic League.
They won 3-1 at Droitwich to inflict a first league defeat of the season on the Midlands club.
The league leaders had won 13 and drawn two of their previous 15 games, and remain seven points clear of the chasing pack.
“It was a good result,” said Stonehouse coach Lewis Fogg. “They’re a good side, we’re very happy with the performance.”
Full-back Spencer Martin took many of the plaudits with two of the goals – the first from 40 yards – while centre-back Richard Thwaites got the other as the visitors raced into a 3-0 lead in the second half.
The first half was goalless and although Droitwich pulled one back through Perry Moss, Fogg said: “We’re very pleased, the boys went out to do a job and they did it very well.
“We brought in winger Jamol Dare and he had a very good game. He’s a very direct runner, no full-back likes defending for 90 minutes, he kept running at them.
“And as they dropped off it gave us space to play, Jacob Eakers was brilliant in midfield.”
Stonehouse remain ninth in the league but have played fewer games that every other team in the 18-strong division.
They are eight points off Shortwood United, who occupy the final play-off position, but have played three games fewer than them.
Stonehouse have actually lost only two of their 13 league games – they’ve won six – and Fogg continued: “We’ve got five games before the new year, they’re huge. Three of them are at home which we’ve made a bit of a fortress, if we can put a little run together we can start moving up the table.”
Fogg and manager Ian Soule joined the club at the start of the season – they were previously at Shortwood – and they’re enjoying their new surroundings.
“We had a good run in the FA Vase,” added Fogg. “We got to the first round proper, we beat two teams who play in a higher league.”
Stonehouse host second-from bottom Southam United in a league game on Saturday and a week later entertain Shortwood.
They are at home to Tytherington Rocks on Tuesday 17th December, before travelling to Chipping Sodbury Town (21st December) and then Cheltenham Saracens (28th December).Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
