A girls’ football team from Gotherington are celebrating after a wonderful cup success.

Gotherington Juniors Jaguars Under-14s won the County Cup with a fine 2-1 win over Cheltenham Town, a game that was played at Oaklands Park Stadium in Bristol.

The competition is contested by teams from both the Bristol Girls’ and Gloucester County leagues, and Gotherington’s victory was the culmination of a three-year journey after they reached the semi-finals as under-12s and then finished runners-up as under-13s.

If there were any nerves in the Gotherington team at the start they soon disappeared because they were in front against Cheltenham in the 16th minute.

And a good goal it was too, as Beatrice Derbyshire played a perfectly timed pass to Abi Ayrey who swept the ball into the bottom left corner from just outside the box.

And they could have had more goals because Flo Morgan twice went close but her first effort was saved in a one-on-one while her second attempt dipped just over the bar.

Cheltenham rallied after the break and Gotherington goalkeeper Isabelle Fletcher was forced into making a number of key saves. The defensive unit, led by captain Hannah Austin, remained resolute, but Cheltenham levelled on the hour following a corner.

But that goal simply spurred on Gotherington and six minutes later they scored what proved to be the winning goal.

Again Derbyshire was involved, this time breaking into the penalty box before being brought down.

And up stepped Chloe Howells who held her nerve to send a precise shot into the bottom left corner.

It was a fine win and coach Wayne Morgan said: “The girls really had to battle to the end. They maybe didn't take their chances early on and let Cheltenham back in but it’s their resilience that makes us incredibly proud of them.

"It takes a lot of work to win one of these."
