Free-scoring Slimbridge made it a magnificent seven as they took another step towards winning the Hellenic League Premier Division title last night.

They defeated title rivals Droitwich Spa 3-0 – their seventh league win in a row – to stretch their lead at the top of the table to nine points with four games remaining.

They took their goals tally to 26 over the past seven games with their win at Thornhill Park, with Olly Sully scoring the pick, collecting the ball just inside the visitors’ half before beating half-a-dozen players and firing home from inside the penalty box.

That goal came on the stroke of half-time but the home side had to wait until five minutes before the end to add a second, a fine strike by winger Shiyak Sutherland.

A minute later Jack W Smith, pictured, made certain of the points when he ran in on goal before rounding the keeper and tapping the ball into an empty net.

The result leaves Droitwich in fourth place, 11 points adrift of Slimbridge although they have played one game fewer.

Second-placed Worcester Raiders have two more points than Droitwich while third-placed Roman Glass St George are one ahead of them with both having four games remaining.

Slimbridge, who travel to fifth-placed Cirencester Town on Saturday, are clearly very well placed to return to Division One South of the Southern League for the first time since 2022/23 but club president John Mack isn’t taking anything for granted.

“We need four points from four games,” he said. “Cirencester Town will be very, very difficult. Then two days later we’ve got to go to Tuffley Rovers.”

Their remaining two games are at Roman Glass St George (Saturday 11th April) and at home to Longlevens (18th April) and Mack continued: “At this stage I don’t like to shout about anything.

“We lost three on the trot earlier in the season, anything can still happen.”

Slimbridge’s goal difference of 45 is considerably better than the teams chasing them and Mack continued: “We’re playing really well, we needed to beat Droitwich.”

And should they win promotion, Mack is confident they will be able to perform at the higher level.

“With the team we’ve got now, I think we’ll go okay,” he said. “I’m not saying we’ll win it but the management team is first class.

“Mike Palmer, Tom Deakin, Sam Prior and Ben Powell know what they are doing. They’ve recruited very well and we’ve got a good side.”
