Old Richians hoping to turn up the Stroud League Division One title heat on Wickwar Wanderers
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 21st March 2025, 09:00
Old Richians head to Minchinhampton on Saturday with a spring in their step.
Wickwar Wanderers’ surprise 2-0 defeat at Shortwood United Reserves at the weekend has breathed new life into the Stroud League Division One title race.
Third-placed Old Richians trail the leaders by nine points but they have two games in hand.
They also host Wickwar in the final game of the season.
“We’re excited, we’re enjoying it,” said Old Richians secretary Robert Mills.
Old Richians have six games remaining and Roberts continued: “We’ve got a difficult run-in but Wickwar play Taverners, who are second, before they play us.
“Hopefully we’ll go into that game still in with a chance.”
Old Richians drew 2-2 at Wickwar back in October but it is their home form that has kept them in the hunt for a place in the Northern Senior League next season.
“We’re very proud of our home form,” added Mills. “We’ve played 12 and won 12. We’ve scored 70-odd goals and conceded only eight.”
Wickwar host Wotton Rovers on Saturday – three of their final four games are at home – while second-placed Taverners, who are eight points off the pace with four games remaining, entertain Horsley United.
Old Richians, who have never played in the Northern Senior League, play Wickwar in the potential winner-takes-all game on Saturday 26th April.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
