AFC Kempsey’s 3-2 win at Cheltenham League Premier Division leaders Winchcombe Town at the weekend means all eyes will on their game at Southside Star on Saturday.

If Kempsey can win by six goals or more against the relegation-threatened side, then the Worcester-based club would win the title for the first time.

They trail Winchcombe by three points with just one game to play – Winchcombe have completed their programme – but anything less than a six-goal winning margin would hand the title to Winchcombe who have a goal difference of 59 to Kempsey’s 53.

A 6-0 win would take the number of goals scored by Kempsey to 79, the same as Winchcombe, and it would also take them to 16 wins for the campaign, the same as Winchcombe.

But Kempsey would win the title because of their better head-to-head record between the two – they also beat Winchcombe 2-0 back in November.

And Kempsey will go into Saturday’s game in very good form, because four days before their win over Winchcombe they beat lowly Smiths Barometrics Athletics Reserves 11-2.

It’s a big challenge for Southside, of course, but they are certainly not going into the game just to make up the numbers.

A win would lift them above Smiths, who have completed their campaign, and out of the bottom two and club secretary Sam Jones said: “Kempsey have had a very good season but it’s a game we want to win.

“We’ve been in the division for quite a while and we want to stay there.”

Tenth-placed Smiths have one more game after Kempsey – they travel to bottom-of-the-table Tewkesbury Athletic on Saturday 18^th May – and Jones continued: “It’s all to play for. Hopefully we get it done before Tewkesbury but if we don’t that will be a real six-pointer.

“We’ve not had our best season but we had a good cup run to reach the semi-final of the Junior Charities Cup.

“We showed that we can put a few results together and you never know what might happen against Kempsey, we can surprise anyone.”

Kempsey, who won the Division One title last season, are withdrawing from the Cheltenham League at the end of the campaign. They have applied to play in the Herefordshire League in 2024/25.
