Miles of smiles as Dursley Town are flying high in the Northern Senior League
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 13th November 2023, 11:50
Dursley Town can go top of Division One of the Northern Senior League on Wednesday evening.
They travel to Stonehouse Town Reserves knowing that a point will be enough to take them above leaders Tredworth Tigers.
Not that manager Karl Nash and his team will be looking for a draw at Stonehouse – they'll want all three points after clocking up nine victories and one draw in their opening 10 league games.
Their impressive start to the campaign includes a 2-1 win at home to Tredworth, who head Dursley on goal difference having played one game more, and club secretary Lino Bertuco said: “It’s going really well, manager Karl Nash has done an amazing job.”
He certainly has because when the one-time Brimscombe and Thrupp striker rejoined the club at the start of the 2018/19 season, the club had suffered back-to-back relegations and were preparing for life in Division One of the Stroud League.
Now the club are dreaming of regaining their place in the County League, a league they finished third in back in the 1990s.
“That’s the aspiration,” continued Bertuco. “It would be reward for all the hard work over the past five years. It would be fantastic for the club and for the town.”
The experienced Nash is still playing and he’s still banging in the goals. He was on target against Tredworth at the end of last month, as was his brother Aaron who also plays up front.
And it’s very much a family affair at Dursley because their brother Antony is the club chairman, a role he took on at the same time as Karl became manager.
Bertuca, meanwhile, rejoined the club some 10 years ago having been a player for the club’s 3rds and 4ths back in the day.
The now 61-year-old is also a former manager of the fourth team but these days, as well as his duties as secretary, he runs the line for the flagship team.
He’s enjoying every minute of it, of course, all the more so because it wasn’t so long ago that that the club were struggling to find enough players to field a reserve side.
That’s all changed now with the reserves riding high in Division Two of the Stroud League after winning the Division Three title last season.
The 3rds and 4ths are also third and second in Division Four South and Division Six respectively and Bertuca said: “All the teams are going really well. We’ve also got a strong youth section which is very important.”
They’ve also got a ladies’ team who are in the top half of the County Women’s League, and Bertuca added: “They are a big part of the club. We’re a real family club.”
Everyone involved in Dursley Town Football Club is clearly having a lot of fun at the moment but it’s fair to say they’ll have even more fun if the men’s flagship team go on to win promotion to the County League at the end of the campaign.Other Images
