Fintan manager Paul Keeling upbeat ahead of showpiece cup final at Cheltenham Town Football Club
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 9th May 2023, 10:00
Fintan will be flying the flag for Cheltenham when they line up for a showpiece cup final tomorrow evening.
Opposing them in the Cheltenham League’s Senior Charities Cup final – a game that is being played at Cheltenham Town Football Club – will be Worcester-based AFC Kempsey, who won the competition last season.
“Absolutely,” said Fintan manager Paul Keeling when asked if his club were representing Cheltenham. “It’s always nice to beat the Worcester clubs.
“This is a big deal for us, there’s a lot of excitement. The fact that we’ve got to the final is brilliant, winning it would be the icing on the cake.”
That will be a tough challenge because Kempsey have just won the Division One title with a perfect playing record of played 16, won 16.
Fintan finished third in Division Two but Keeling does not regard his team as underdogs.
“No I don’t,” he said. “On our day I think we’re capable of getting a result against anyone.”
They overcame Premier Division side Bishop’s Cleeve A in a penalty shootout to book their place in the final and Keeling added: “That was a brilliant game, a real end-to-end nil-niller.”
Keeling, a former captain of the club, is in his second season as a manager.
He was a player when the club were first formed back in 2007 and is ambitious.
“We’re a solid team,” he said. “I play three at the back with wing-backs, three in midfield and two up front. I want to win the division next season.”
Tomorrow’s final kicks off at 7pm.
