Down Ampney and Stratton United chasing County Cup final glory
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 3rd April 2023, 11:00
Down Ampney head for Bishop’s Cleeve tomorrow evening for the Gloucestershire FA Minor Cup (North) final hoping to go one better than last season.
They finished runners-up 12 months ago, losing out to Gloucester Athletic who won the trophy with a 3-0 win.
This time around Down Ampney, who play in the Premier Division of the Swindon and District League, are playing Cotswolds neighbours Stratton United, who are flying high in Division Four of the Stroud League.
Both clubs used to play in the Cirencester League so their paths have crossed on many occasions over the years.
Down Ampney won promotion from Division One of the Swindon League last season and have been up among the leaders in the top flight this season.
“There are about six teams of a similar standard,” said secretary Matt Tyson. “We started the season really well.
“The cup is a one-off. Games like this stick in the memory, the boys definitely want to win this.”
Stratton United definitely want to win it too and no-one more so than Dan Timbrell, who is also the club’s secretary.
“I’ve never won a cup final,” said the 33-year-old. “I’ve been a runner-up but never played in a winning cup final side.”
And Stratton won’t be short of support at the game which kicks off at 7.30pm.
“We’re taking a coachload of supporters,” continued Timbrell. “Most of the boys are taking Wednesday off, it should be a good match.
“There’s a bit of local rivalry, everybody’s up for it.”Other Images
