Cheltenham Football League building up to a grandstand finish
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 31st March 2023, 11:00
The Cheltenham Football League season is into its final few weeks and there is much to play for.
The Premier Division title is still very much up for grabs and it looks as though it won’t be decided until the beginning of May.
That’s when the big two – Whaddon United and FC Lakeside Reserves – will go head-to-head in what surely will be a winner-takes-all clash.
They meet on Tuesday 2nd May at Lakeside having drawn 1-1 at Whaddon at the end of November.
Both teams are still unbeaten in the league, with Whaddon having won 12 and drawn one, while Lakeside, who still have 10 league games to play, have won nine and drawn one. Whaddon’s goal difference is 43 while Lakeside’s is 35.
Meanwhile, Senior Charities Cup holders AFC Kempsey have booked themselves another day out at the home of Cheltenham Town after beating Hanley Swan 3-2 in the last four at Bishop’s Cleeve last night.
The Division One leaders await the winners of the other semi-final between Fintan and Bishop’s Cleeve A, a game which will take place at Bishop’s Cleeve on Tuesday 25th April. Cheltenham League fixtures secretary John Hunt said the date of the final had yet to be confirmed.
The league’s Junior Charities Cup and Minor Charities Cup have also reached the last four stage.
