Champions Longlevens Reserves were presented with the Northern Senior League Division One trophy last night, a night that saw them end their league campaign with a 3-0 win at Tredworth Tigers.

Two goals by James Barnett and one by Alex Knight earned them their 22nd league win in 26 games this season.

It was their seventh league win in a row but it was their 2-0 victory at Whaddon United in mid-April - Brad Martin got both their goals - that proved to be crucial in the race for the title and they went on to finish four points clear of their main rivals.

Longlevens lost just one league game all season – they also scored 82 goals - and club secretary Calum Newman said: “It’s been a brilliant season, we’ve got a good blend of older heads and younger players. We score a lot of goals.”

The season isn’t over yet, though, for Longlevens' joint managers Ben Symons and Craig Martin and their assistants Dale Rawlins and Mike Rinaldi because they now face a play-off tie against Wessex Wanderers, champions of the Bristol & Suburban League, to determine whether they will be promoted to the County League.

The winner-takes-all game will be played at Almondsbury on Wednesday 13th May (7.30pm) and Newman admitted: “It will be really frustrating if we don’t go up, we’ll be gutted.

“It would really push the club forward  if we can go up, the reserves have never played in the County League.

“The last time we had a team in the County League was when the first team won the title in 2014/15.”

That shows just how far the club have come in the past decade because the first team are now an established Hellenic League Premier Division side.

Wessex Wanderers will provide a stern test next week, however, after winning 15 and drawing three of their 20 Premier Division games this season.

But Longlevens Reserves, who have finished in the top four in Division One of the Northern Senior League in each of the past four seasons, have shown plenty of resilience this season as they have chased down Whaddon United.

“We’ve always had games in hand on them,” added Newman. “I prefer to have the points in the bag, but we’ve done really well.”
