Brockworth Albion ready for GFA Senior Amateur Cup final challenge against Hanham Athletic
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 22nd April 2024, 12:00
Brockworth Albion are chasing a cup double when they head to Bristol tomorrow night.
The Northern Senior League Division One pacesetters take on Hanham Athletic, who play in the County League, in the GFA Senior Amateur Cup final having won the Reg Davis Memorial Cup earlier in the campaign.
Tomorrow’s game takes place at Almondsbury, the home of the GFA, and it will be a big occasion for both clubs.
“We’re looking forward to it,” said Brockworth’s club secretary Andy White. “It will be a tough game but we’ve already beaten teams from the County League in this season’s competition – Broadwell, Sharpness and Bromley Heath.”
The County League is one level above the Northern Senior League and Hanham, who lost 4-2 at Cheltenham Civil Service on Saturday, are in seventh place in the 16-strong division having won 13 of their 23 games.
Brockworth, meanwhile, won their 18th league game of the season with a 3-0 win at home to Charfield on Saturday, and Clarke said player/manager Jamie Martin and his team were in confident mood.
The free-scoring Matthew Cairns was among the goalscorers against Charfield and White continued: “It would be a proud moment if we could beat Hanham.
“Jamie Martin has done really well since taking over a couple of years ago. We finished second last season.”
Martin’s goals have played a big part in Brockworth’s success in recent times and promotion to the County League is definitely the aim for the club with White, a former player, adding: “Everything is in place, it’s all geared up for promotion.”
That’s unlikely to happen this season because second-placed Longlevens Reserves are just a point behind Brockworth with three games in hand.
Brockworth have just two league games remaining and White admitted: “We’ve played too many games.”
Chalford, Tredworth and Dursley Town could all still win the title if Longlevens slip up.
Third-placed Chalford, are a point behind Brockworth with four games remaining; Tredworth, who Brockworth beat 2-1 back in October to claim the league’s Reg Davis Memorial Cup, are two points behind the leaders from two games fewer, while Dursley are the outsiders, five points behind Brockworth with four games left to play.
Tomorrow’s cup final kicks off at 7.30pm with White adding: “We’ve got quite a few supporters going.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
