Barnwood United looking to kick on in Division Two of the Northern Senior League

Barnwood United are bouncing after producing one of the standout performances in the Northern Senior League so far this season.

Hayden Rust’s men went to unbeaten Division Two leaders Smiths Barometrics and thumped them 5-1 to cement their place in fourth spot in the 15-team division.

Smiths had won 10 and drawn one of their previous 11 league games and remain top despite the defeat.

“It was a great win,” said Barnwood secretary Michael Bollands. “We weren’t at full strength but we played very well.”

Under-17 Jay Tomlinson started at right-back for Barnwood while another of the club’s up-and-coming youngsters, Travis Overthrow, scored one of their goals after going on as a substitute.

Dan Smith, Ryan Cook, Cameron Thornton and Josh Abbott-Tarrant got their other goals and Bollands added: “This win should give the players belief, if they can do it against Smiths then why can’t they do it every week?”

It was Barnwood’s sixth win in 11 league games this season – they’ve also drawn three – and they remain 10 points adrift of the leaders although they have played a game fewer.

They are without a fixture today – their next game is a rearranged fixture at home to sixth-placed Mushet & Coalway a week today – and they will be looking to kick on over the next few weeks.

“Promotion has to be the aim this season after going so close in the past couple of seasons,” said Bollands.

They finished third last season and fourth in 2023/24.
