If Tuffley Rovers Youth Under-12s Blues win their final eight games of the season they will complete a league and cup double.

The in-form team are second in the Under-12A Division in the Severn Valley Youth League and also through to the last eight of the League Cup.

And they can take a big step towards winning the league title when they travel to play Thornbury Town Youth Under-12s Phoenix on Saturday.

Thornbury hold a two-point advantage over Tuffley but have played two games more.

They won 4-2 when the two teams met at the start of November but Tuffley are unbeaten away in the league this season while Thornbury have lost twice at home.

“It’s a big game, the boys are doing really well,” said Dave Taylor, who is one part of Tuffley's coaching team alongside Stuart Hall and Anthony Worrall.

“Last season we finished top of the under-11 second division which meant we went into the top division this season.

“I thought if we could finish in the top three or four we’d have done really well but now we could win both the league and the cup.”

Taylor started the team when they were under-7s. His son Charlie, a right-back, is one of only three players from the original group – goalkeeper Nate Jones and left-sided midfielder Benji Broadbent are the others – and they have certainly been improving at a rapid rate.

This is their second season of playing 9-a-side and Taylor said: “We tend to line up in a 3-3-2, but we can switch to 3-4-1 if we’re defending a lead.

“They are really good boys, they can all play in different positions, they are all accomplished footballers.

“We want to push the team forward, we want to kick on.”

Chance Smith, the son of Lydney Town boss Lee Smith, joined the club at the start of the season and has banged in 20-plus goals in all competitions while Zeke Adamson, Matthew Thomas and Logan Lyn have all hit double figures.

Captain Broady Neale, along with Jake Worrall and Jude Hall, the sons of Taylor’s two fellow coaches, are also key players, and Taylor continued: “Technically, they are all good players.

“At training, all we do is two-touch and three-touch. We like to play out from the back, we try to play football the right way.”
