Late goal double sends Frampton United six points clear at top of the County League
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 20th January 2020, 12:30
Frampton United have gone six points clear at the top of the County League after a 3-2 win at Rockleaze Rangers.
Two late goals earned them all three points, the third week in a row that they have grabbed control of a game in the closing stages.
Rangers took a fifth-minute lead when Toby Walwin’s shot was saved by Aaron Taylor but Toby Webb followed up to score.
It could have been 2-0 on 30 minutes but for a superb save by Taylor to deny Webb. But three minutes before the break Frampton were level although their goal had some good fortune about it because Ryan Vincent’s shot struck a post before hitting keeper Lewis Brodie on his back and finishing up in the back of the net.
Rangers retook the lead on 75 minutes when Toby Webb got behind the United defence and crossed for Jordan Dent to net, and Dent was very unlucky soon after when he saw his chip over Taylor drift just past the post.
Then came the late finish from Frampton. Firstly Steve Jackson levelled the score on 91 minutes after Brodie had parried the first shot on goal and then Fraser Wilson grabbed the winner in the 94th minute after Fin Blythe set up the chance.
Quedgeley Wanderers were held to a 0-0 draw by visiting AEK Boco in a game that wasn’t short of chances at both ends.
The first opportunity fell to Dorian Colling on two minutes but he headed over from Henry Birkett’s cross and Colling had another good chance for Wanderers 10 minutes later from a Kyle James-Bryan cross but again it went over the bar.
Boco’s first effort on goal came on 22 minutes, a shot from Louis Ross that was well saved by keeper Nathan Charnock.
Kyle James-Bryan shot over for the home side and just before the break Liam Powell was just wide for Boco. The second half continued in the same vein with both sides having shots on goal but failing to get the ball in the back of the net.
Sharpness are through to the semi-finals of the Les James Cup after a 2-1 victory over visitors Ruardean Hill Rangers.
The home side started well and went close on three occasions early on through Tom Freeman, Will Lacey and Brad Hewer.
Rangers’ first chance came in the 34th minute when Steve Coombs broke through the home defence and then saw keeper Dan Hobbs pull off a great save.
Sharpness went ahead in the 36th minute with a cross-shot from Sam Strickland that flew over Yemm and into the net at the far post.
The Sharks could have made it 2-0 on 39 minutes when Alex Gayner hit a good shot on goal and when the ball came back out to him only a brilliant clearance off the line by Stuart Corwell-Boote prevented it going in.
Sharpness did however make it 2-0 just before half time when Alex Gayner’s shot came back off the post straight to brother Dan who slotted the ball past Yemm.
Rangers came out with renewed vigour in the second half and pulled a goal back after a terrific run by Luke Brown who laid the ball off to Steve Clarke to drive past Hobbs.
In the other quarter-final, Gala Wilton overcame Broadwell Amateurs 2-1 in a game that was switched to Gala due to Broadwell’s pitch being unfit.
And Gala made a flying start, going ahead in the first minute when Martin Smith beat keeper Reed after Craig Howell had put him clear on goal.
On 21 minutes Ryan Dobbins turned on the edge of the box and hit a great shot at goal but Reed was equal to it and brought off a good save.
Broadwell should have equalised on 35 minutes when Gala keeper Brabham misjudged a cross, but Liam Thomas’ header went wide.
Broadwell levelled the score on 73 minutes when Kristian Burnard lobbed the keeper after a great through ball from Greg Lewis but with five minutes left Gala grabbed the winner when Martin Smith bundled his way through the Broadwell defence to slot the ball past Reed.
