Fintan Reserves turn on the style as they defeat Cheltenham League Division Four leaders Tewkesbury Athletic
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 13th January 2020, 12:20
Fintan Reserves pulled off one of the shocks of the day as they defeated Cheltenham League Division Four leaders Tewkesbury Athletic 3-2 on Saturday.Goals by central midfielder Lucas Walker, and strikers Dylan Revie and Lee Hitchman earned them victory and lifted them up to fifth place with four wins and a draw from their six league games and although they trail Tewkesbury by 11 points, they have played four games fewer.Right wing-back Jake Tracey was man-of-the-match and assistant manager Kev Wilcox said: “It was a good win. We were 2-1 down at half-time but we came back well in the second half.”Wilcox added that Fintan, who gave a debut to goalkeeper Luke Baillie on Saturday, are targeting promotion to Division Three this season.Meanwhile, Winchcombe Town Reserves, who ended Tewkesbury’s 100 per cent start to the league campaign just before Christmas, closed the gap on the leaders to six points with a 3-0 win at AFC Renegades Reserves and they also have two games in hand.Woodmancote are another team who are going well in the division and they made it five wins out of six with an odd goal in seven win at Charlton Rovers III, while Kempsey Corinthians made it four out of four with a 4-1 win at Gala Wilton A.Meanwhile, AFC Cheltenham, Bishop’s Cleeve Development and Apperley all progressed into the semi-finals of the County Primary Cup with wins over Cashes Green, Tuffley 5ths and Rodborough and Cainscross Old Boys 3rds respectively.Up to Division One of the Cheltenham League where Tewkesbury Town have regained pole position after winning 5-1 at Shurdington Rovers while previous leaders Malvern Vale were losing 1-0 to Prestbury Rovers. But the form team in the division at the moment are undoubtedly Whaddon United as they climb into second place, above Malvern Vale on goal difference, after winning 12-0 at bottom-of-the-table Newton. The prolific Kevin Slack was again among the goals as he grabbed a hat-trick but he had to play second fiddle to Mike Winter because he scored four while Kyle Gibbs got two. The win leaves Whaddon three points adrift of Tewkesbury with two games in hand.Dowty Dynmaos are scoring goals for fun – they hit 19 past Andoversford Reserves in the Senior Charities Cup the previous week – and they added another six on Saturday as they overcame Bredon Reserves 6-2.Elsewhere AFC Renegades drew 1-1 with Hanley Swan while the game between Southside Star and Kings ended goalless.Meanwhile Cheltenham Civil Service Reserves are through to the last four of the County Junior Cup after a 3-0 win over Huntley.Smiths Barometrics Athletic Reserves continue to set a hot pace at the top of Division Two of the Cheltenham League as they defeated St Paul’s United 1-0 and now have a seven-point advantage over nearest rivals Prestbury Rovers.Leckhampton Rovers are going well in the top four after a 2-1 win at Brockworth Albion Reserves and they are level on points with Gala Wilton Reserves who defeated Andoversford Reserves 4-0.In the bottom half of the table Welland Reserves overcame Fintan 4-3, while Prestbury Rovers Reserves and Windyridge Rovers are through to the last four of the County Intermediate Cup after wins over Horsley United and Hempstead respectively. It was first against second in Division Three of the Cheltenham League as leaders Smiths Baromterics Athletic III travelled to Cheltenham United.Smiths started the day with a three-point lead and that has now been stretched to six after a 4-2 win. They have also played one game fewer.Cheltenham Civil Service III are their nearest rivals and remain three points behind them with two games in hand after beating Tewkesbury Town Reserves 2-1.Elsewhere Southside Star Reserves overcame Falcons Reserves 5-3 while Worcester City Royals defeated Malvern Vale Reserves 4-0.In the County Minor Cup, all-conquering FC Lakeside Reserves are through to the last four after a 1-0 win over Soudley but there was disappointment for Charlton Rovers Reserves who went out on penalties after drawing 2-2 with Kingsway Rovers Reserves.Cheltenham League resultsDiv 1Malvern Vale FC First 0 Prestbury Rovers First 1Dowty Dynamos 6 Bredon Reserves 2Hanley Swan 1 AFC Renegades (Saturday) First 1Newton 0 Whaddon United 12Shurdington Rovers 1 Tewkesbury Town First 5Southside Star FC First 0 Kings FC 0Div 2Andoversford Reserves 0 Gala Wilton Reserves 4Brockworth Albion Reserves 1 Leckhampton Rovers 2Smiths Barometrics Athletic Reserves 1 St Pauls United 0Welland Reserves 4 Fintan First 3Div 3Cheltenham United 2 Smiths Barometrics Athletic 3rds 4Falcons Reserves 3 Southside Star FC Reserves 5Tewkesbury Town Reserves 1 Cheltenham Civil Service 3rd 2Worcester City Royals FC 4 Malvern Vale FC Reserves 0Div 4AFC Renegades (Saturday) Reserves 0 Winchcombe Town Reserves 3Charlton Rovers Third 3 Woodmancote United First 4Cheltenham Saracens Thirds P Pittville United Reserves PFintan Reserves 3 Tewkesbury Athletic First 2Gala Wilton A 1 Kempsey Corinthians FC 4GFA Junior CupTibberton United (Firsts) P Bishops Cleeve FC A Team PCheltenham Civil Service Res 3 Huntley (Firsts) 0GFA Intermediate CupWindyridge Rovers 3 Hempsted First 0Horsley United (Firsts) 3 Prestbury Rovers Reserves 6GFA Minor CupKingsway Rovers (Reserves) 2 Charlton Rovers Reserves 2 (Kingsway won 5-4 on pens)Soudley (Firsts) 0 FC Lakeside Reserves 1GFA Primary CupAFC Cheltenham 9 Cashes Green (Firsts) 0Apperley 1st 3 Rodborough and Cainscross Old B (Thirds) 1Bishops Cleeve FC Development 3 Tuffley Rovers (5ths) 1The Cheltenham League is sponsored by Bristol Street Motors Cheltenham Ford.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
