Windyridge Rovers march on in County Cup PLUS all the Cheltenham League results
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 9th December 2019, 12:30
Cheltenham League Division Two Windyridge Rovers are on the march in this year’s County GFA Intermediate Cup.
They have won four of their six league games this season and Paul Bowden’s side have proved that on their day they are a match for most teams.
And that certainly proved the case on Saturday as they won 2-1 at fellow Division Two side Brockworth Albion Reserves to advance into the fourth round.
They will be joined in the next stage of the competition by fellow Cheltenham League side Prestbury Rovers, who thumped Tetbury Town Reserves 5-1 but Andoversford Reserves, Leckhampton Rovers and Gala Wilton Reserves all went out.
Cheltenham Civil Service Reserves moved into the fourth round of the County GFA Junior Cup with a 2-1 win at AFC Renegades while Bishop’s Cleeve A enjoyed a similar result at Cam Bulldogs Reserves.
Southside Star went out of the competition, however, beaten by the odd in goal in seven at Old Richians.
There are new leaders in Division One of the Cheltenham League, with Malvern Vale going three points clear after a crushing 10-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Newton.
Whaddon United moved up to second with a 5-0 win at Hanley Swan and Kev Taylor’s side are certainly the form team in the division because although they trail the leaders by three points, they have played four games fewer.
Shurdington Rovers slipped to their second league defeat in a row, going down 3-2 against Dowty Dynamos while in the other game in the division Kings drew 2-2 at home to Bredon Reserves. Bredon took the lead with a Luke Sutherland free-kick but the home side were level when Matt Hill slotted home at the second attempt after an excellent save by Stuart Chappell.
Bredon went back in front through Neil Goodwin but Kings rallied and their pressure was rewarded when John Edwards netted with a long range effort.
There were just two games in Division Two, one of which saw St Paul’s United climb into the top three with a 4-0 win against Pittville United. Two places above them, Smiths Barometrics Athletic Reserves stretched their advantage to four points at the top with a 2-1 win at Welland Reserves.
Smiths Barometrics Athletic Reserves drew level at the top of Division Three with a 5-0 win at Southside Star Reserves while Cheltenham Civil Service 3rds moved up to third despite being held to a 1-1 draw at Falcons Reserves.
Tewkesbury Athletic continue to set the hottest of hot paces in Division Four, with their 2-0 success at home to Gala Wilton A making it seven wins out of seven.
There were four Senior Charity Cup ties on Saturday and three of them saw teams from Division Four triumph over sides from Division Three.
Woodmancote United overcame Worcester City Royals 3-1, AFC Cheltenham won 5-3 at Charlton Rovers Reserves and Kempsey Corinthians defeated 303 Squadron 4-3.
The one match which went with form saw FC Lakeside Reserves defeat Winchcombe Town Reserves 4-0. Lakeside have been banging in the goals all season and the previous week thumped 11 past Tewkesbury Town Reserves, a game which saw Joseph Richards score five while assistant boss Rich Webb also got on the scoresheet.
