Quedgeley Wanderers are too strong for leaders Wick in County League
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 14th October 2019, 14:50
Quedgeley Wanderers climbed into the top six of the County League with a 2-1 win at home to leaders Wick on Saturday.
Wick had an early chance to take the lead when Joe Thomas found himself one on one with the goalkeeper but Farmer made a fine save.
Wick did take the lead on 13 minutes through a cracking shot by Mike Hardiman and they had several more chances before Quedgeley threatened with a Kyle James-Bryan effort that went over the bar.
Nathan Payne then shot wide for the home side but right-on half-time Wanderers levelled when Kyle James-Bryan turned in Henry Birkett’s cross.
In the second half Birkett shot just wide on 77 minutes before Wanderers grabbed the winner in the 82nd minute with a tremendous shot from Nathan Payne.
Hardwicke made it two wins in a row when they defeated visitors Hanham Athletic 1-0.
The first opportunity fell to Hardwicke’s James Ratcliffe on six minutes but he hit his shot just wide and the home side threatened again when Paul Carter’s effort was hit straight at Hanham keeper Ashley Bamford.
Five minutes into the second half Hardwicke’s Kieran Tracey and Hanham’s Jack Fry were both shown red after they clashed following a tackle and 10 minutes later the
Ratcliffe then had a chance to stretch the lead but he shot straight at Bamford.
Sharpness took advantage of a number of games being postponed to move into the top three with a 2-0 win over Henbury.
Sharpness started well and Dan Gayner went close with a volley on five minutes and then Tariq Soliman fired over the bar when in a good scoring position.
Henbury had chances of their own but it wasn’t until three minutes into the second half that the deadlock was broken when Dan Gayner rose to head goalwards from a Brad Hewer corner and watched as the ball crept over the line.
Henbury were unfortunate when Joe Cox’s shot struck the upright but the home side made it 2-0 on 85 minutes with Will Lacey turning in Brad Hewer’s cross.
