Cheltenham League club Cheltenham United are flying high in league and cup
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 18th January 2019, 09:30
In-form Cheltenham United are through to the last four of the Gloucestershire FA Primary North Cup – the deepest they have gone in the competition in their history.
The Cheltenham League Division Four club booked their place in the semi-finals with a comprehensive 6-0 win over Cam Bulldogs 3rds, who play in Division Six of the Stroud League.
Player/manager Kris Mohan, who plays just off the striker, got two of their goals while Carl Crisp also got two and there was one apiece for Harry Winders and Chris Clavin.
Cheltenham United play their home games on the artificial grass pitch at All Saints Academy in Blaisdon Way and Mohan, 28, said: “It was a fantastic team performance, we blew them away in the first 30 minutes with our high intensity level and quality on the ball scoring 4 goals."
“We really could have scored more than six, but it was all about getting the win in the end. It was great to see how important it was to every single player that we get through to the Semi Final, they all wanted to win.
“When your career is over you want to be able look back at times when you have won trophies and this is a good opportunity for us to really go for it.”
So which of their super six goals against Cam was the best?
“I’d like to say one of mine,” said Mohan with a laugh, “but I was just in the right place at the right time. I think Carl Crisp’s first goal was probably the best."
“We got a free-kick on the halfway line. Kieran Clavin took it quickly and sent a lobbed pass over to me on the left. I controlled it on my chest before playing a pass first time around the defender to Carl. He then dinked it over a defender before half-volleying it with his right foot into the top corner.”
Mohan, who took over as player/boss at the start of the 2016/17 season, certainly enjoys playing on the artificial pitch.
“It’s an advantage for us because it allows us to play good football,” he said. “We like to play on the floor. Some of the grass pitches we play on can be quite slopey and bobbly, we tend to struggle away.”
Not that there has been too much evidence of the team struggling away from All Saints this season because they have won 11 of their 12 games in the Cheltenham League and are in a three-way battle for the title with Malvern Cave and FC Lakeside Reserves.
Cheltenham United were formed in 2012 and know what it is like to win a trophy because they won the Cheltenham League Minor Charities Cup back in 2015, beating Malvern Vale 8-0 in the final.
Mohan, who is also the club’s secretary, was part of that successful team and while that victory was special, winning the County Primary North Cup this year would be an even greater achievement.
