Kings Stanley hoping to topple leaders Charfield in Stroud League crunch clash
Stroud District > Sport > Football

Saturday could be a very special day for Roger Bassett – and not just because it’s his 75th birthday.
Bassett is chairman of Kings Stanley Football Club and tomorrow they go head-to-head with table-topping Charfield in the biggest game of the season so far in the Stroud League.
Charfield boast a perfect 10 out of 10 winning record in Division One and up until last week Kings Stanley could also boast a 100 per cent winning record as well.
However, they were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by lowly Tetbury Town six days ago, which means that they go into the game at Charfield two points adrift of their hosts.
And the significance of tomorrow’s game is not lost on anyone at Kings Stanley.
“The lads will be up for it, especially after last week,” said Bassett, who has lived in Kings Stanley for some 70 years. “We just didn’t play as well as we have been playing, it was just one of those games. The conditions didn’t help, there was a very strong wind and the ball was off the pitch more than it was on it.
“I know it’s the same for both teams but it disrupted our patterns.”
Charfield, meanwhile, were winning 3-1 at Stonehouse Town reserves to take their goal difference to 26 – Kings Stanley’s is 20 – and they will be a stern test on Saturday.
“They’ve obviously put a good side together,” said Bassett, before adding, “but promotion is definitely the aim for us this season, we want to get into the Northern Senior League.
“There’s still a long way to go, it’s a marathon not a sprint although we obviously don’t want to fall too far behind.”
Bassett, who is in his second season as chairman after being club secretary for many, many years, is hopeful that John Brodie and Corey Fletcher are available to take on Charfield after they missed the game against Tetbury.
And should Kings Stanley manage to end Charfield’s unbeaten run and go into Christmas on top of the table, it’s a fair bet that no one will be more pleased than Stroud-born Bassett who has been part of the club for close on six decades.
“I signed for the club in 1960,” he said. “I was a full-back and never played anywhere else. I stopped playing when I broke my leg in two places when I was 38 and I’ve been on the committee ever since.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
