Gala Wilton through to the second round of County League’s Les James Cup, but it’s so close
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 3rd September 2018, 14:10
Gala Wilton won their game against Southmead CS Athletic, not once, but twice.
They stormed into a 3-0 half-time lead in the County League’s Les James Cup but in the end only progressed to the second round through a penalty shootout.
The home side went ahead when Craig Powell gave them the lead on 15 minutes from the penalty spot. Jay Dare made it 2-0 on 27 minutes, tapping in from a free-kick, and it got better for Gala as a ball played over the top of the visitors’ defence in the 38th minute allowed Kyle Bakewell to make it three.
But if the first half was Gala’s the second half was most definitely Southmead’s, as they scored goals through Otis Francis, Aiyetoro Hinds and Leon Clayton-Clark.
The penalty shootout went the way of the home side as they pulled through 3-1.
Another game decided by a penalty shootout was at Stonehouse, where the home side edged into the next round after their game with Rockleaze Rangers had ended 1-1.
However, Stonehouse needed a last-minute equaliser to take it into a shootout which they won 4-1.
Rangers had a host of chances in the first half but had only a Dan Webb header to show for their efforts at the break as they were kept out by the excellent goalkeeping of Adam Clark.
And while the visitors held the upper hand in the opening 45 minutes, Stonehouse went close to levelling when Luke Soule’s well struck shot cannoned of the crossbar.
Both sides had chances in the second half. Alex Kibble’s 20-yard shot was well saved by visiting keeper Lewis Broadie and Will Hayward headed wide on the hour when well placed.
Hayward’s volley then went wide of the target, and it looked as though time was running out for Stonehouse until Luke Barstow headed home a dramatic late equaliser.
Early-season County League pace-setters Lebeq United hosted second-placed Frampton United, with the visitors easing into the second round with a 3-1 win.
The opening 30 minutes was even but in the 32nd minute Frampton took the lead with a well worked move down the right, and the cross into the box found Kris Bulley to tap the ball in.
Two minutes into the second half the visitors went 2-0 up when Lebeq lost possession and Manolo Espada slammed the ball home from the edge of the box.
A bad defensive mistake by the home side allowed Manolo Espada to make it 3-0 with a well taken headed goal. James Hall popped up in the box in the 54th minute to head a goal back for the home side, but despite plenty of pressing they could not find another goal.
Broadwell Amateurs were sunk by a late goal against visitors Henbury, going down 1-0.
An Adam Rosser volley, well saved by goalkeeper Jamie Merry, was a warning to Broadwell but the home side also threatened with Liam Thomas’s good run ending with him firing wide.
The goal came in the 82nd minute following a shot that struck the corner of the bar and rebounded straight to Harvey Moran to drive home.
Kristian Burnard then shot over the bar for Broadwell after a free-kick as Henbury held on.
Hardwicke went down by the odd goal in five at Hanham Athletic, who went ahead two minutes before the break through Tom Welling.
Hardwicke hit back strongly at the start of the second half and were rewarded when Shaun Smith headed home on the hour.
Ten minutes later James Ractliffe struck a Hanham post, but a minute later they were in the lead when Will Matthews chested the ball over the line.
But they couldn’t hold on as late goals by George Cryer sent the home side through.
Ruardean Hill Rangers eased to a 2-1 win at home to Patchway Town. A Steve Coombs cross found Luke Johnson and he scored from an acute angle to put the home side in the lead on 20 minutes.
Eight minutes into the second half Patchway were on level terms through Ash Wells, but Rangers grabbed the winner in the 66th minute thanks to good play from Luke Johnson and Kane Fellows who set up Shaun Tingle to score.
Other results: AEK Boco 2 Wick 2 (AEK Boco win 4-3 pens); Kingswood 0 Little Stoke 2 (at Henbury).Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
