Cheltenham Town manager Gary Johnson is sacked after 1-1 draw at Macclesfield Town

Cheltenham Town are looking for a new manager after they sacked Gary Johnson last night.

The 62-year-old has paid the price for a hugely disappointing start to the League Two campaign which has seen three defeats followed by last night’s 1-1 draw at Macclesfield Town.

Cheltenham trailed for over an hour against opponents who themselves had lost their first three games and only salvaged a point when Manny Duku scored what was their first league goal of the season five minutes from time.

Johnson’s assistant, Russell Milton, has been placed in temporary charge, a role he has fulfilled before.

The first two-and-a-half weeks of the 2018/19 season have been a far cry from what was hoped for by new Cheltenham chairman Andy Wilcox.

Speaking to The Local Answer last month, he said: We will require a big step up from last season, of course, but if and when that is achieved we at Cheltenham Town Football Club see no reason why we can’t push for promotion to League One. These are ambitious thoughts of mine but without those dreams we fail.”

Cheltenham, who finished 17th last season, travel to Cambridge United on Saturday.
