St Paul’s United clinch Division Three title in Cheltenham League
Author: Contributed, Posted: Monday, 16th April 2018, 12:20
Unbeaten St Paul’s United clinched the Cheltenham League Division Three title with a thumping 6-0 win over Cheltenham United on Saturday.
They are 10 points clear of nearest rivals AFC Renegades, who have only three games left to play.
Renegades, who won the County Minor Cup on Thursday, are guaranteed one of the four end-of-season play-off places and look as though they are in good form going into those games as they defeated FC Barometrics III 4-1.
Barometrics are also certain of a place in the play-offs alongside Brockworth Albion Reserves and Charlton Rovers Reserves who defeated FC Lakeside Reserves 3-2 and Kings Reserves 7-2 respectively.
In the top division, Upton Town eased into second place behind runaway champions Cheltenham Civil Service with a 2-1 win at Shurdington Rovers.
However, they are still 16 points behind Service, who booked their place in the Senior Charities Cup final with a 3-2 win over Whaddon United Reserves on Friday courtesy of a Stu Midwinter hat-trick.
But while the title races in divisions one and three are wrapped up, it’s much tighter in Division Two where The Beeches and Cheltenham Civil Service Reserves are fighting it out for the one automatic promotion place.
Beeches hold a three-point advantage but have played a game more, while Service, who have three games to play, have a nine-goal better goal difference than The Beeches.
Service improved that goal difference with a 6-0 win over Southside Star on Saturday while The Beeches were 3-0 winners over Prestbury Reserves.
The battle for the play-off places in this division has been red-hot for much of the season with Hanley Swan – 7-2 winners at Tewkesbury Town Reserves – and FC Barometrics Reserves, who drew 3-3 with Bredon Reserves, now both sure to feature.
The final place is between Fintan and Southside. Both teams have one game to play but Fintan hold a two-point advantage although Southside have a considerably better goal difference.
Prestbury Rovers Reserves slipped to their third league defeat of the season in Division Four when they went down 2-1 at fourth-placed Malvern Vale FC First. They remain a point behind leaders Malvern Vale FC Academy with two games in hand.
The title is between these two and the remaining three play-off places will be filled by Welland Reserves, Malvern Vale FC First and Woodmancote United.
The Cheltenham League is sponsored by Bristol Street Motors Cheltenham Ford.
