Cheltenham Civil Service closing in on a treble top

Cheltenham Civil Service are just one game away from completing a very impressive treble as they prepare to FC Barometrics Reserves in the Cheltenham League’s Senior Charities Cup Final at Whaddon Road on Wednesday.
They’d won the Cheltenham League Division One title before the start of March and clinched the GFA Junior North Cup with a 4-1 over Charfield on Thursday, which included a double from Stu Midwinter.
Service’s cup victory capped a fantastic season for Cheltenham League teams in the County Cup competitions as they joined FC Barometric Reserves, AFC Renegades and Prestbury Rovers Reserves in a clean sweep of the county-wide cups.
And it’s been a wonderful season for Cheltenham Civil Service as a club because their reserves clinched the Division Two title last week with a 1-0 win at Gala Wilton Reserves.
Mind you, there was plenty of drama because Gala had already beaten Service 1-0 earlier in the season but the League ordered the game to be replayed after Gala played an ineligible player.
With a contingent of The Beeches players on the sidelines supporting Gala, the home side frustrated Service with the teams deadlocked until the closing minutes. With Service’s chances looking to be disappearing, Jack Horrell turned out to be the late hero, grabbing an 87th-minute goal that won the game and claimed the title on goal difference.
It was a particularly sweet moment for the Midwinter family as while Stu’s goals have done so much for the first team this season, brother Dan, the reserve team player/manager, claimed the Division Two title in his first full season in charge.
Elsewhere in Division One, Andoversford can still claim the runners-up spot after their 6-0 demolition of Newton while Bishop’s Cleeve III are certain to finish fourth after their 3-2 win over Shurdington Rovers.
The Division Two play-off final will be contested by The Beeches and FC Barometrics Reserves on Saturday. The Beeches, who led the table almost all season before being pipped by Service, defeated Fintan 1-0 whole Baros overcame Hanley Swan 7-2.
In Division Three AFC Renegades went into the play-offs as favourites after finishing runners-up, 15 points ahead of FC Barometrics III, the team they faced on Saturday. And they didn’t disappoint their supporters as they won 3-0 to book a play-off final place against Charlton Rovers Reserves who defeated Brockworth Albion Reserves 2-0.
The Division Four play-off final will be between Welland Reserves and Malvern Vale FC Academy after they overcame Malvern Vale FC First 4-2 and Woodmancote United 5-1 respectively.
All three play-off finals will take place on Saturday.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
