Andoversford earn narrow win over Bishop’s Cleeve 3rds in Cheltenham League
Author: Contributed, Posted: Monday, 22nd January 2018, 13:20
Andoversford rediscovered some of their early season form as they defeated Bishop’s Cleeve III 2-1.
It was only Cleeve’s second defeat of the season in Division One of the Cheltenham Football League, sponsored by Bristol Street Motors Cheltenham Ford, and drops them into the bottom half of what is a pretty congested middle part of the table.
Leaders Cheltenham Civil Service aren’t part of that congestion, of course, and they stretched their advantage to 11 points with a 10-0 hammering of RSG, a win which included a Joe McCauley hat-trick.
Struggling RSG will be pleased to see the back of Service because they lost 7-0 to them earlier in the season.
Dowty Dynamos’ struggles since the festive period continued as they lost 2-0 at home to Shurdington Rovers, who lifted themselves out of the bottom two with that result.
One of the teams they move above were Kings – RSG were the other – but it was tough on Kings because they gained a creditable 2-2 draw at Newton.
Cheltenham Civil Service Reserves are hoping to make it a one-two for the club as far as winning titles is concerned, and they kept the pressure on leaders The Beeches in Division Two.
The Beeches game at Bredon Reserves was postponed and Service took full advantage by beating Prestbury Rovers 6-2 at Prestbury. Service now trail the leaders by 10 points, but crucially have four games in hand on The Beeches.
At the other end of the table bottom club Pittville United slipped to a 3-2 defeat at home to FC Barometrics Reserves, while the team immediately above them, Andoversford Reserves, were well beaten 6-2 at Hanley Swan.
Meanwhile, Gala Wilton Reserves cemented their position in mid-table with a 3-2 win at Tewkesbury Town Reserves, who continue to struggle.
Leckhampton Rovers couldn’t repeat their early-season heroics against runaway Division Three leaders St Paul’s United.
When the two teams met earlier in the season it ended 3-3, but this time it was 4-1 to St Paul’s who, as a result, maintain their seven-point advantage over AFC Renegades.
The gap between the two top teams is a lot closer than first appears, however, and it’s all to play for because Renegades have two games in hand and the two teams have yet to play each other.
Renegades kept the leaders in their sights with a 3-1 win at FC Lakeside Reserves.
FC Barometrics 3rds gained revenge for their County Cup defeat at the hands of Cheltenham Civil Service III’s the previous week with a 3-2 win on Saturday, while Kings FC Reserves moved off the bottom with a narrow 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Falcons Reserves.
It’s pretty tight at the bottom – just four points separate the bottom four – and Cheltenham United didn’t help their cause by slipping to a 3-2 defeat at home to Windyridge Rovers, who climbed to third as a result.
Meanwhile, Dowty Dynamos and Brockworth Albion Reserves shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw.
Prestbury Rovers Reserves – the only team with a 100 per cent winning record – march on in Division Four with a 3-0 win at Gala Wilton 3rds.
And their position at the top of the table was strengthened by the fact that the side closest to them, Woodmancote United, crashed 6-0 at third-placed Malvern Vale FC Academy.
There were plenty of goals when Welland Reserves hosted Cheltenham Saracens 3rds, but unfortunately for the visitors nearly all of the goals were in their net as they were thumped 13-1.
Only Charlton Rovers 3rds are below Saracens in the table, and Rovers remain 10 points adrift after going down 2-0 at Winchcombe Town Reserves.
Elsewhere, Malvern Vale drew 3-3 at Andoversford 3rds, while Fintan Reserves won 5-0 at Smiths Athletic Reserves.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
