Cheltenham Civil Service’s cup win is a statement of intent

A new competition sprang into life in the Cheltenham Football League at the weekend.
The new-look Senior Charities Cup is the first all-division cup competition in the recent history of the league, which is sponsored by Bristol Street Motors Cheltenham Ford.
But while it may be a new competition, there was an old favourite that made a winning start on Saturday.
Cheltenham Civil Service have been tearing up Division One this season and it was no surprise when they transferred their form to the knockout competition.
They beat Andoversford 3-1 – the team they had beaten 4-3 in the league the previous weekend – to show that they have their eyes on more than one trophy this season.
In the only other game played in the competition Pittville United, of Division Two, defeated Smiths Athletic Reserves, who play two divisions below them, 2-1.
There were two matches in Division One. Upton Town started the day 14 points off top spot but with three games in hand on Service. Victory against Kings would see them move into second above Tewkesbury Town and they duly delivered with a 6-0 win.
RSG, meanwhile, hosted Dowty Dynamos, but were unable to make home advantage count as they went down 5-1.
There was just one game in Division Two with bottom club Andoversford Reserves taking on Bredon Reserves. After a tough start Andoversford had found some form in recent weeks winning two of their last three games, their only points of the season. They put up a good show this time around as well before going down by the odd goal in five.
There were two matches in Division Three, one of which saw bottom club Kings Reserves host the team immediately above them, Cheltenham United.
As expected it was tight and after 90 minutes just one goal separated the teams. Crucially it was United who won by the odd goal in three.
In the only other game in the division Falcons Reserves were beaten 5-1 by Charlton Rovers Reserves.
There was only one match in division four with Winchcombe Town Reserves winning 2-0 at Fintan Reserves.
Other results – Junior Charity Trophy: Tewkesbury T 2, Beeches 1; Fintan First 1, Gala Wilton Res 2; Hanley Swan 3, Shurdington R 2.
Minor Charity Cup: Brockworth Alb Res 3, FC Baros 3rds 0; Cheltenham CS Res 7, Malvern Vale 1; Tewkesbury T Res 0, AFC Renegades 5.
Primary Charity Trophy: Cheltenham CS 3rds 6, Woodmancote Utd 0; Gala Wilton 3rds 5, Andoversford 3rds 2; Leckhampton R 1, Dowty Dynamos Res 3.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
