We’re ready for Forest Green test, says Cheltenham Town assistant boss Russell Milton
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 23rd November 2017, 09:00
Russell Milton is predicting a “fiery affair” when Cheltenham Town head to Forest Green for the first ever clash between the two clubs in the Football League.
Cheltenham’s point in the 0-0 draw against Cambridge United on Tuesday and Forest Green’s 3-2 defeat at Chesterfield means that whatever happens at the New Lawn, Gary Johnson’s men will be ahead of their closest rivals in the League Two table come Saturday evening.
Four points and four places separate 16th-placed Cheltenham from Forest Green and Milton would love to extend that advantage in a couple of days’ time.
“Yes, we would, for sure,” he said. “It’s important for us to try to keep ahead of them. It’s great for Gloucestershire to have two teams in the Football League but we want to be the number one.
“The fans will certainly be up for the game and it’s a game when none of the players will need motivating. It will be a fiery affair.
“Every game is so important in this division. It’s so tight and we’re almost as close to the play-offs as we are to the relegation places.”
Forest Green’s defeat at Chesterfield, in a game that saw Manny Monthe sent off, brought to an end a much-improved run of form that has taken them out of the bottom two.
The upturn started soon after their 2-1 Checkatrade Trophy win at Cheltenham last month.
Cheltenham made half-a-dozen changes to their team that night but Milton admitted: “They’ve come on very well over the past few weeks. They’ve been on a good run and won four or five games just like we did a bit earlier in the season.
“It should be a good game on Saturday. Both teams try to get the ball down and play football.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
