Lewis Driscoll and Stu Midwinter on target as Cheltenham Civil Service go marching on

There appears to be no stopping Cheltenham Civil Service.
They strengthened their position at the top of Division One of the Cheltenham Football League, sponsored by Bristol Street Motors Cheltenham Ford, with a 3-2 win at Upton Town.
Upton went into the game in fourth place, 11 points behind Service but with three games in hand.
However, they are now a massive 14 points adrift of the leaders after going down 3-2 at home, with two goals for Lewis Driscoll and a Stu Midwinter strike proving decisive.
That clash wasn’t the only one at the top of the table with second-placed Tewkesbury Town hosting third-placed Newton. And home advantage proved key as Tewkesbury enjoyed a resounding 5-1 win.
Andoversford started the day in fifth place but any hopes they had of making up ground on the teams above them disappeared as they slipped to a surprising 4-2 defeat against Shurdington Rovers.
Whaddon United Reserves, like Shurdington, are another team who have been struggling for points and their task didn’t look any easier as they went into their latest match against Bishop’s Cleeve III.
Cleeve may have started the day in seventh place but they had only been beaten once in their seven league outings, although their four drawn matches means they are unlikely to be challenging for top spot. However, they recorded win number three with a 4-2 success to ensure that Whaddon’s worries continue.
In the final game in the division, RSG hosted Kings with honours ending even in a 3-3 draw.
Into Division Two and leaders The Beeches faced a trip to Hanley Swan who started the day in third.
With games in hand on The Beeches and second-placed Cheltenham Civil Service Reserves, victory for Swan would see them throw their hat into the ring as serious title contenders while denting The Beeches own aspirations.
The result however suggested that the gap between first and third is much wider than the two places suggest as the leaders spanked Swan 11-2.
Cheltenham Civil Service Reserves, meanwhile, travelled to Andoversford Reserves. Andoversford had lost their opening eight league games and that figure is now nine as Service won 8-0 with player/manager Dan Midwinter helping himself to a hat-trick.
Gala Wilton Reserves started the day in seventh but a narrow 2-1 defeat against Service the previous week suggested they could be closer to the top three.
Gala took on Bredon Reserves, who suffered a surprise defeat last time out against Tewkesbury Town Reserves, but had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw.
Pittville United were beaten by the odd goal in five against Fintan and in the match near the bottom of the table Prestbury Rovers edged to a 2-1 win over Southside Star FC.
Division Three leaders St Pauls go marching on with a 5-1 success against Charlton Rovers III who now have just seven points from eight games.
With AFC Renegades without a game, Brockworth Albion Rovers could jump into second spot with a win over FC Barometrics III. Baros suffered a surprise defeat the previous Saturday at the hands of Kings Reserves and were looking to bounce back. In the end both teams had to settle for a draw after sharing six goals.
Cheltenham United went into the weekend in bottom spot and with a five-point gap between themselves and Kings, the team above them. They may still be bottom but a 3-2 win over Leckhampton Rovers has left them feeling much happier.
United’s afternoon improved further as Kings lost 3-1 at Windyridge.
A 6-1 win at Falcons the previous weekend move Dowty Dynamos Reserves into sixth although they were still only three points ahead of 12th place.
Dowty had the same number of points as FC Lakeside Reserves, their opponents on Saturday, but they are now three points clear of them after registering a 3-1 win.
Falcons slipped to another defeat, beaten 2-0 by Cheltenham Civil Service III who made it three wins in a row.
Prestbury Rovers Reserves have been flying high in Division Four having won all of their matches.
However, they faced a test of their title credentials against Malvern Vale, who have been one of the stronger teams in the division this season. Prestbury came through with flying colours, however, as they eased to a 3-0 win.
Woodmancote United have been keeping on Prestbury’s tail, having won six of their eight games, including a 1-0 win over Malvern the previous weekend.
They faced a stern challenge on Saturday when they hosted Welland Reserves who started the day two points and two places below them. It was a big game and it was Welland who emerged victorious, winning 3-1 to move into second place.
Gala Wilton III are another team who feel they are in with a chance of competing for honours come May. They were two points off second place before the latest round of matches and faced a Smiths Athletic Reserves team whose seventh place at the start of the day did not do justice to their potential. That potential was clearly demonstrated as they handed Gala a 6-1 defeat.
Winchcombe Town Reserves proved too strong for Bishop’s Cleeve Development Reserves as they trounced them 8-0 and there were plenty of goals in the game between Andoversford III and Malvern Vale Academy. Unfortunately for Andoversford the majority of them were in their net as they lost 12-2.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
