Goal bonanza at Cheltenham Youth Football League cup finals day
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 9th May 2017, 11:10, Tags: Junior Sport
There were goals galore when the older teams took centre stage on the Cheltenham Youth Football League’s second cup finals day at Whaddon Road.
Four matches produced 22 goals with Tuffley Rovers and Churchdown Panthers hitting five each as they won the under-15 and under-16 cup respectively against Leckhampton Rovers and Ebley Youth.
Not far behind were FC Lakeside who hit four past Leckhampton Harriers to win the under-13 cup.
The closest game was in the under-14 cup final where Leckhampton Lions edged out Wotton Rovers 3-2.
“It was a fantastic way to end the season,” said fixtures secretary Denise Pates, who is also the league’s registration co-ordinator.
“I think all the players enjoyed it. Obviously the teams that won did but even the losing teams will realise how well they have done to play at Cheltenham Town Football Club.”
Sunday’s football fiesta is not quite the end of the season, however.
“We’ve got one more game to go,” said Pates, who admits she is looking forward to the summer. “It’s the Under-13 Division One play-off between Leckhampton Harriers and Cinderford Town. They both had the same number of points but goal difference doesn’t count.”
The match takes place at Shurdington playing fields tonight (6.45pm).
The end-of-season award for the Cheltenham Youth League’s Referee of the Year went to Colin Hardy.
“He has done a great job and did the under-16 final,” said Pates.
Results:
Under-13 Cup: FC Lakeside 4-1 Leckhampton Harriers.
Under-14 Cup: Leckhampton Lions 3-2 Wotton Rovers.
Under-15 Cup: Tuffley Rovers 5-1 Leckhampton Rovers.
Under-16 Cup: Churchdown Panthers 5-1 Ebley Youth.
