Charity cyclists ride ‘around the world’ for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Saturday, 29th June 2019, 09:00
More than 500 charity cyclists took to the Cotswolds last weekend in support of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, cycling between them an astonishing 43,400km – enough to scale Mount Everest 58 times and ride around the equator of the world.
And their efforts mean the world to hospice volunteers and staff, and the Gloucestershire families they care for, which has seen over £30,000 in funds flood in so far and more donations made daily.
It was the 31st year the charity cycle ride has set off around the Cotswolds in support of the only hospice in the county with a specialist palliative care inpatient unit, which has seen the number of cyclists taking part surge 115 percent over the past three years.
Pete Millington was one of the 534 cyclists taking part and he said, “This was the second year I have done Ride for Ryder and I managed to step up from the 90km to the 130km route.
“The ride itself was tough but taking in some great countryside, and I cannot compliment the organisation, signage and support enough, along with the enthusiasm of the volunteers, which really makes this event stand out.
“I have had first-hand experience of the hospice, its staff and the amazing work that is done there, so it is great to be able to give a little bit back while doing something that keeps me fit and I enjoy.”
Matt Reay, the senior community fundraiser for the event, said: “Huge thanks to all the riders who joined us this year, and our 100-plus volunteers, sponsors Perry Bishop and Chambers, and our partners and suppliers who made this year’s Ride for Ryder the biggest and best yet.
“As a charity we can’t stage events like this and raise vital funds for families needing our care without all these people showing up and giving their support.
“Ride for Ryder is becoming a go-to ride for lots of cyclists, and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back on Sunday 28th June 2020 – get the date in your diary!”
