The Cheltenham Festival is such a great experience, says Gloucestershire captain Chris Dent
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 24th June 2019, 09:00
Chris Dent may be Gloucestershire’s captain and a top opening batsman, but in many ways he’s just like everyone else because he loves the Cheltenham Cricket Festival.
This year the Festival runs from Monday 15th July to Sunday 28th July and the in-form 28-year-old Dent said: “It’s the most enjoyable 10 days of the season, it’s a real highlight, everyone loves it.
“It’s hard work but there’s a different feel to the Festival – there’s always good crowds, a great atmosphere and the cricket is always good.”
Dent is right on all three counts of course.
And it’s certainly a ground that the left-handed Dent has fond memories of because he scored his maiden first-class century there against Surrey in 2011.
“Yes, I’ve done quite well there,” he said. “I think the quicker, bouncier pitches suit me.”
They also would appear to suit Dent’s opening partner Miles Hammond who followed his captain’s lead by scoring his first first-class century at the same ground last year.
Both players will be hoping to be in the runs at Cheltenham again this season with Gloucestershire playing host to two county championship games and two T20 games.
The Festival gets under way with a four-day game against Leicestershire with the first T20 game against Glamorgan on Friday 19th July.
The second four-day game, against Worcestershire, starts on Sunday 21st July, with the final T20 game, against Middlesex, taking place on Thursday 25th July.
England Under-19s take centre stage on Friday 26th July when they play a 50 overs game against India and they are back in Cheltenham two days later when they take on Bangladesh.
Bangladesh and India play each in the Tri-Series on the Saturday.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
