Stroud skipper Angus Gegg hits six off last ball to clinch stunning one-wicket win
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 2nd July 2024, 11:00
Stroud’s Angus Gegg took four wickets before hitting the match-winning six off the final ball of the gameSkipper Angus Gegg smashed a towering six from the final ball of the game to clinch a stunning one-wicket win for Stroud over Langford in the Gloucestershire Division of the West of England Premier League.
And only a maximum would have done for Stroud because they were still five runs adrift of Langdon’s 259 all out total when that final delivery was bowled.
It was certainly a very sweet moment for Gegg, who took over the captaincy from his brother Louis at the start of the campaign.
“It was the best moment of my cricketing life by far,” Gegg told The Local Answer. “I hit it between mid-on and cow corner, I connected with it better than any other ball I’ve ever faced.”
So how did he feel immediately after his wonder shot?
“I was in shock for a couple of seconds,” he admitted. “Then I heard the roar of the team.”
Gegg, batting at 10, finished unbeaten on 22 and the shot was all the more remarkable because he was batting with a broken finger.
“I broke the middle finger of my left hand trying to take a catch against Frocester three weeks ago,” he said.
“My finger has been in a splint and I was told not to play for six weeks but I’m the captain, I couldn’t do that!
“I normally bat at seven but have obviously dropped down the order. I can’t grip the bat properly, it really hurts.”
Stroud needed 43 from 4.2 overs when Gegg joined Devon Ferreira at the wicket and they needed 20 from 10 balls when Ferreira fell for 25 and Gegg was joined by 16-year-old Tyler Wood.
The number 11 played his part – two singles from the two balls he faced – but Gegg knew it was on him if Stroud were to secure a remarkable win.
“We needed six off the last two balls but I swung at the first one and missed,” he said.
That served only to increase the drama, of course.
“I thought it would be a miracle if we won,” admitted Gegg, whose 15-ball innings included two sixes and one four.
“You never expect to get the chance where you need a six off the last ball to win a game and if you do get the chance you don’t expect to do it.”
Rueben Shehean’s 74 from 63 balls had earlier kept Stroud in the hunt – he hit seven fours and four sixes – and there were important contributions from Ewan Gegg (37), Luke Benneyworth (33) and Lewis Culver (20).
But Angus Gegg was undoubtedly the star of the show, and not just for his batting, because the pace bowler took 4-38 from his 10 overs as Langford were dismissed with seven balls of their 50 overs remaining.
“It was a must-win game,” said Gegg. “It was halfway through the season and it gets us up to sixth in the table.
“We had a very young side out. I was the second oldest at 26, it was a brilliant game to win.”
The victory sees Stroud leapfrog Langford, who are now seventh in the 10-strong division, but Gegg had plenty of words of praise for Langford.
“They were a great bunch of lads,” he said. “It was a great game, a great day all-round.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
