Two legends of Stroud Cricket Club have been honoured for their services over many years.

Dave Moore and Rick Carman's devotion to the cause has been recognised as part of the club’s 175th anniversary celebrations.

The Dave Moore End and the Rick Carman End are now permanent features at one of the club’s two pitches at Ryeford and chairman James Collins said:  “They are utter gents, Dave has already done a Jimmy Anderson and taken a wicket at the Dave Moore End!”

Both Moore and Carmen are now in their 70s and Collins continued: “Dave and Rick are amazing, they both bowl with little or no pace.

“But they are nagglingly accurate, batsmen don’t know what to do.”

Moore, opening the bowling, took 2-12 from four overs in Stroud 4ths’ 42-run win at Eastcombe 2nds on Saturday, which took his tally of wickets for the club to 499, and he’s set to play tomorrow at home to Chalford 2nds in Division 9E of the Gloucestershire League.

Should he take wicket number 500, that would be another special moment for the club in what is obviously a very special year.

Just under two weeks ago, former Gloucestershire and England wicketkeeper Jack Russell was one of many ex-players who were at Ryeford to mark the club's 175 years, and Collins said: “Jack coming down was really lovely.

“He spoke enormously emotionally about Dave and said he owed him his career, it was a not a dry eye in the house moment.

“Dave set up the club’s junior section 50 years ago. He was part of the coaching set-up initially and reached out to local schools to get the kids to come along.

“Jack was one of those kids and when he said he wanted a go behind the stumps, Dave said he could. Jack said that’s when he started keeping.”

Moore and Carman aren’t the only two whose dedication has been recognised by the club because presentations were also made to 1st XI scorer Hilary Whittenbury, treasurer James Wigley and secretary Tom Legg.

“They do so much behind the scenes, a massive amount,” added Collins.

Collins, meanwhile, captained Stroud’s 3rd XI to a 10-wicket win over Painswick 3rds in Division 8C of the Gloucestershire League on Saturday, part of a clean sweep for the club’s men’s teams.

“It’s only the fifth time in the club’s history we’ve won all four men's games on the same day,” said Collins. “The last time was in June 2019. The other three times were in 2017, 2009 and 1999 but to get results in all four games on Saturday considering the weather was a miracle.”

Four players have played on all five occasions the club have completed four wins on the same day – Dave Moore, Rich Cox, Chris Dutton and Ollie Holmes.
