Sheepscombe bowler Connor Humphreys' magic spell helps bowl out rivals for 26
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 20th August 2024, 13:30
Young right-arm seam bowler Connor Humphreys produced a stunning six-over spell which saw him take eight wickets for just 10 runs.
His new-ball demolition job set up a thumping 231-run win for Sheepscombe as visitors Lydney 2nds were bowled out for just 26 in fewer than 12 overs in Division Five of the Gloucestershire County League.
Remarkably, Humphreys didn’t need any help from his team-mates either, because five of his victims were bowled and the other three fell lbw.
“He pitches it up at a good pace and swings it into the batsmen really late,” said long-time Sheepscombe player Iain Collins.
“He cleans them up, he’s a really good bowler, very effective.”
Humphreys played his first league game for the club only at the start of June and Collins said: “I think he was playing pub cricket before.
“He’s played eight or nine games for us, he takes the new ball and he’s been amazing.
“I don’t think I’ve ever known a side being bowled out for 26, you’d have to go back to the 60s when pitches were really bad.”
Humphreys took the first eight wickets to fall against the bottom-of-the-table side and would have been eyeing all 10 before new-ball partner Jack Thomas nipped in to take the final two.
Thomas had earlier made 134 from 98 balls as the home side made 257-9 from their 40 overs with opener Ed McDonald the next highest scorer with 30.
“Jack has been with us a long time,” said Collins. “He’s a really good batsman, he times the ball really well, he’s very powerful.”
Thomas has been a regular run-scorer for the club over the years and Collins added with a laugh: “He made 134 and took 2-7 with the ball and still wasn’t man-of-the-match!”
That accolade obviously went to Humphreys, who has been in terrific form in recent weeks.
He took 5-27 in six overs against high-flying Whitminster seven days earlier, when he again didn’t need any help from his team-mates as he bowled four and had the other lbw.
That spell helped Sheepscombe, who are fifth in the 10-strong division, to a 22-run win.
Sheepscombe have two league games remaining, at Cheltenham 3rds on Saturday and at home to Cirencester 2nds the following week.Other Images
