Frampton-on-Severn’s Nick Peacey hit a towering six over long-on to win a low-scoring thriller by one wicket at Dumbleton 2nds.

It was his only scoring shot and it came just in time for the visitors because he was facing the fourth ball of the final over of a rain-affected game.

Dumbleton 2nds, the Gloucestershire County League Division Three pacesetters, had been dismissed for 88 in 19.3 of their allotted 23 overs, with only three of their batsmen reaching double figures.

Frampton, who are fifth in the 10-strong division, had appeared to be well placed when they reached 71-4 but they then lost five wickets for 11 runs.

Peacey, a wicketkeeper, was batting at 10 and his side still needed seven to win when he strode to the wicket.

Connor Davis was then run out without any addition to the score but Peacey, who has been playing for the club for some 30 years, proved to be the man for the big moment with his maximum taking his side to 89-9.

“He can hit a long ball but it’s not something he does too often,” said skipper Daniel Halsey, who is also Peacey’s brother-in-law. “He hit it to one of the bigger boundaries.

“Credit to Dumbleton for getting the game played.

“It was a good game to win but we didn’t celebrate too much, it was one we should have won much more easily but we succumbed to the pressure.

“At the end it was more a sigh of relief that we got over the line.”

And Halsey, who took 3-20 with his medium pace, said the wicket was not to blame for the low scoring.

Frampton opener Nathan Hudd recorded the highest score of the game – 27 – and only one other visiting batsman reached double figures.

“The wicket was spot on, it was a good wicket,” insisted Halsey. “They were two good bowling units.”

Left-arm spinner Akshay Sreenivasan, who was at the wicket when Peacey hit the winning runs, took 3-18.

The Gloucestershire County League website actually shows that Sreenivasan hit the winning six and Halsey added: “Yes, it does, but everyone at the club knows it was Nick!”

Four teams – Dumbleton 2nds (263 points), Ullenwood Bharat (259), Hatherley and Reddings 2nds (253) and Gloucester AIW (248) – are in the hunt for the two promotion places going into the final round of matches on Saturday.

Dumbleton travel to Gloucester AIW while Hatherley host seveth-placed Fairford and Ullenwood entertain eighth-placed Dymock.

Frampton, meanwhile, are at home to ninth-placed Cinderford St John.
